Kissimmee, Fla.—After opening up their six game Florida trip with a big offensive output yesterday, the Concordia University Chicago Baseball team took to the field today against the College of St.Scholastica. The Cougars picked up their fourth straight win by a 3-1 score behind seven strong innings from Kyle Strepek.

  • Strepek worked seven shutout innings allowing just four hits while striking out 11.
  • Cole Carman picked up the first save of his career working around a two out double in the ninth.
  • Jose Mercado continued his season opening run, collecting three more hits on the day.
  • Brody Mariotti added to his team leading RBI total with a two RBI single in the fifth.

Pitching dominated on both sides through the first four innings.  Both sides were able to put baserunners on board, but were unable to cash in with runners in scoring position. Strepek did work out of two situations with runners at third, including in the fourth when the Saints had a runner at third and less than two out.

CUC finally was able to break through in the fifth. After an error put a runner on, Jacob Frank laid down a perfect bunt that went for a base hit. When trying to throw Frank out at first, the throw went high allowing Mateo Calle to scamper to third. One out later it was Mercado who laced one off of the diving glove of the Saints third basemen to bring home a run. With two outs and the bases loaded Mariotti looped a single through the left side scoring Frank and Mercado to make it 3-0 CUC.

That was all of the offense CUC would need on the day as Strepek continued to cruise through the seventh. Noah Dressler came on in relief and gave up one run, but kept CUC in the lead by getting a bases loaded strikeout to end the Scholastica threat

Carman then picked up his first career save by working a scoreless ninth. The sophomore got a groundout and a strikeout before working around a two out double by inducing a fly ball to right.

The Cougars (4-1) will enjoy an off day on Tuesday before resuming action on Wednesday morning. First pitch is scheduled for 9:30am (ET) from the sunshine state.
