Spartan Shorts: Coach Rick Espeset's team stands 3-3 … Offense and plenty of it, to the tune of a .351 team batting average, has been the early-season story. Four Spartans returned from the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C., with .400-plus marks topped by sophomore first baseman Nick Rush (Terre Haute, Ind.) who gained Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week accolades March 5. Rush, at .474 with a double, home run and nine RBI among his his nine safeties, was followed by junior shortstop Braxton Riley (Fort Wayne, Ind.) (.458 – three doubles, two home runs and six RBI); junior right fielder Tyler LaFollette (Warsaw, Ind.) (.429 – a double, a home run and five RBI); and junior second baseman Christian Smith (Fortville, Ind.) (.400 – two doubles and five RBI) … The upperclassman pitching duo of junior Jordan Hilyard (Decatur, Ind.) and senior Garrett Phelps (Covington, Ind.) top the mound statistics through six games. Hilyard fired a complete-game gem in the final Palmetto State match-up, no allowing an earned run and being nicked for just six hits in a 12-1 victory over SUNY-Fredonia March 3. It was the first complete game for a Black and Gold hurler since 2016. Phelps was called in from the bullpen in three games over the trip registering a 3.60 earned run average with a save and only two earned runs given up in five innings of work … The weekend's set against the Tigers opens a run of five of the next eight being played against the North Coast Athletic Conference. After facing off against Heidelberg University from the Ohio Athletic Conference in a home and away three-tilt schedule Saturday and Sunday, March 17 and 18, MU travels to Wabash College for a doubleheader Tuesday, March 20.
