#3 Cortland Sweeps Case Western Reserve, 5-4 and 12-6

BRIDGEWATER, VA. - The Cortland baseball team, ranked third nationally in Division III, swept Case Western Reserve University in a doubleheader held at Bridgewater College. The Red Dragons (8-2) held on to win the first game, 5-4, and won the nightcap, 12-6.

Cortland will travel to Ferrum College for a 2 p.m. game Sunday.


GAME 1: Cortland 5, Case Western 4

Jeff Cooke (Rome/Rome Free Academy) threw six solid innings for the win in the opener. Now 2-1 on the season, Cooke allowed five hits and two runs, one earned, over six innings. He struck out six and walked one. Payten Boice (Homer) tossed the final three innings for his second save of the year. He allowed two ninth-inning runs and give up four hits with three strikeouts and no walks.

Case Western led 2-0 after three innings as Noah Mehrle singled in a run in the top of the first and Aaron Cain hit a sacrifice fly in the third. Cortland gained the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a one-out Matt Michalski (Buffalo/St. Francis) walk, a Patrick Schetter (Beacon) hit-by-pitch, and a two-out, three-run homer by Nate Budge (Central Square/Paul V. Moore).

The Red Dragons added what proved to be two vital runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jack Massa (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) plated a run with a sacrifice fly and Schetter hit a two-out RBI single.

Cortland held a 5-2 lead into the ninth. The Spartans, however, rallied on a Mike Najmowicz RBI single and a two-out Roccoss Maue RBI single. With the potential tying run on second and go-ahead run on first, Boice escaped the jam by inducing a fielder's choice forceout to end the game.

Budge finished 2-for-4 with his three-run homer and Tyler Phillips (Hancock) was 2-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch. Steven Figueroa (Bronx/St. Raymond's) was 1-for-2 with a walk and double and Schetter ended 1-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch and RBI.

Dan Watson was 2-for-3 and Mehrle went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Case Western, which out-hit Cortland, 9-7. Jake Shields suffered the loss after allowing six hits and five runs in seven innings. He struck out seven and walked three.


GAME 2: Cortland 12, Case Western 6

Justin Teague (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) went 3-for-3 with a homer, triple, walk, three RBI and three runs scored in support of Alex Weingarten (East Rockaway/Lynbrook), who improved to 2-0 with the victory. Weingarten allowed three hits, one walk and one unearned run and fanned seven batters in five innings.

Marcos Perivolaris (Mattituck), seeing his first action of the season, hit a three-run homer as part of Cortland's six-run top of the fourth. Schetter finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs, and Jon Warner (Tully) was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Tony Damiano was 3-for-5 with two runs, Danny Souza went 2-for-2 with two RBI and Dan Watson ended 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBI for Case Western (1-7). Mark Gross suffered the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, in four innings.

Cortland's big sixth inning also featured a Teague RBI triple and run-scoring singles by Schetter and Matthew Personius (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) in addition to Perivolaris' homer. The Red Dragons went up 9-1 in the fifth on RBI singles by Dan Schweitzer (Poughquag/Arlington), Casey Komanecky (Auburn) and Warner, and Teague hit a two-run homer in the sixth to push the advantage to 11-1.

Watson hit a two-run single and Souza a two-run triple in a four-run eighth for the Spartans. Cortland's final run came on a Shawn Kelly (Smithtown/Smithtown East) bases-loaded walk in the top of the ninth, while Case scored its last run on a Jacob Kucia ninth-inning RBI double.
