The Buena Vista University baseball team scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings before adding a pair of late insurance runs in the eighth en route to a 6-0 victory over Simpson on Friday night at the Iowa Conference Tournament inside of Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids.
With temperatures dipping into the mid-40's throughout the game, BVU was held in check early on by Simpson starter Trey Kehoe. The lefty, making just his second start of the year, did not allow a hit to the Beavers through the first four innings.
Michael Zellar broke the hitless streak leading off the fifth when he lined a single up the middle and then advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher as he tried to flip the ball to first when Noah Paper pushed a bunt up the first base side.
Brandon Wessels followed later in the inning with a sharp single to right center field, scoring Paper and giving the Beavers a 2-0 advantage. It was Wessels' first hit of the tournament and also tied the school's all-time hits record of 222, set back in 2011 by Brad Blum.
Paper and Harms each singled home runs in the sixth for a 4-0 lead before Neil Marshall and Wessels added RBI's in the eighth.
Justin Lange (6-1) gave the Beavers a strong effort on the mound, going eight innings, allowing just four hits and worked around five walks.
Zellar and Paper each went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the game with Harms tallying a pair of RBI.
The game was originally scheduled for a 4:00pm start, but was pushed back to 7:00pm when the game before it was delayed nearly 2.5 hours by rain.
The win moves BVU to 32-10 on the year and sends the team into an elimination game against Coe College (18-21) at 10:00am Saturday morning.
