OSWEGO, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team dropped a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) series doubleheader to No. 13 SUNY Oswego on Friday afternoon. The Hawks fell, 9-3, in game one before falling 5-4 in game two.
The Hawks drop to 11-8-2, 4-4 SUNYAC while Oswego improves to 16-3, 3-2 SUNYAC. The teams close out the three-game series tomorrow at 12 p.m.
Game 1: New Paltz 3, Oswego 9
The Lakers stormed ahead with the lead in the bottom of the first on a three-run home run by junior third baseman Eric Hamilton before adding an RBI single by junior second baseman Zach Kollar to cap off the inning with a 4-0 edge.
The Hawks responded in the top of the fourth when senior third baseman Andrew DiNardo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) ripped a two-run homer to left field, cutting the Lakers' lead to 4-2. Junior left fielder Taylor Anderson (East New Market, Md./Cambridge-South Dorchester) sliced the deficit further, taking advantage of an Oswego error to run home for a close 4-3 score.
In the top of the sixth, senior shortstop Brian Hamilton hit an RBI single to add to Oswego's lead before junior left fielder Myles Kutscher belted the Lakers' second home run of the day to push the lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the seventh. Oswego sealed the win as sophomore right fielder John Barnes and Eric Hamilton added the two runs for the final 9-3 tally.
Sophomore pitcher Connor Donachie (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) shouldered the loss, allowing five runs off 13 hits and striking out four batters. Junior pitcher Tim Cronin did not allow a run and surrendered just four hits to take the win on the mound for Oswego.
New Paltz had six student-athletes combine for its seven hits, with DiNardo going 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs. Six Lakers posted multi-hit outings, with Eric Hamilton leading the group with a 3-for-4 performance that included two runs and three RBIs.
Game 2: New Paltz 4, Oswego 5
Similar to the previous game, the Lakers grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second but New Paltz would land on the scoreboard in the following inning as sophomore center fielder Jake Williams (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) took advantage of a double play to score the Hawks' lone run.
Despite Oswego extending its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the third, junior first baseman Anthony Diana (North Amawalk, N.Y./Somers) hit a two-run home run to trim the deficit to 4-3 in the top of the fourth before sophomore designated hitter Chris Moran (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) hit a single up the middle in the top of the seventh to bring home sophomore right fielder Nick DePietro (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) for a 4-all score.
However Oswego sealed the win the bottom of the seventh when senior designated Matt Capobianco hit an RBI double bat in Zollar for the final run.
Diana went 1-for-2 with one run and two RBIs while Moran went 1-for-3 with one RBI and a walk. Capobianco led the Lakers, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI with junior catcher Alex Brown adding one run and two RBIs in a 2-for-3 performance.
Sophomore pitcher Ryan Votypka (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) took the loss on the mound, giving up one run off three hits and striking out one batter for a 2-2 record. Sophomore pitcher Ryan Donnelly picked up the win for Oswego, giving up four runs off five hits and striking out three batters.
