Pointers win regional opener, defeating Greenville 7-4

WATERLOO, Iowa – The top-seeded and seventh-ranked UW-Stevens Point began its showing at the Waterloo Regional by defeating sixth-seeded Greenville 7-4 on Wednesday afternoon at River Front Stadium.

UW-Stevens Point (32-12) pounded out 15 hits and Mitch Beau (Fond du Lac, WI/St. Mary Springs) improved to 8-2 this season by allowing just one earned run in six innings of work. Greenville (22-20) trailed 5-1 early and got within one with a three-run fifth but could get no closer over the final four innings.
UW-Stevens Point will face the loser of the third and game of the day between third-seeded Wartburg and fourth-seeded Anderson, which begins at 7 p.m. The Pointers will play the loser of that game at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 14.
The Pointers got on the board early, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. After a single by Bobby Gregorich (Plover, WI/SPASH) and a double by Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) left runners at first and third, Taylor Carlson (Madison, WI/La Follette) hit a sacrifice fly for UWSP's first run. The next batter, Cody Hanke (Marathon, WI/Marathon), followed with a run-scoring double to right-center field to make it 2-0.
After the teams traded the next two runs, UW-Stevens Point stretched its lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth, starting the inning with three-straight hits. Kyle McHugh (Polonia, WI/Rosholt) singled to open the inning and then scored on a triple off the wall off the bat of Ray Greco (Downers Grove, IL/North). Greco then scored on a single by Alex Tarras (Weston, WI/D.C. Everest).
Greenville fought back in the top of the fifth, scoring three times to get within a run. Dalton McFarland delivered a two-out, two-run double past a diving Carlson and down the left-field line to make the score 5-4.
The Pointers got one run back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Beau and held the Panthers scoreless over their final four at bats. Nick Prebelski (Green Bay, WI/Notre Dame) took over for Beau after six and earned a three-inning save, allowing just one hit and striking out two.
Ryan Strohm started for Greenville and took the loss, allowing six runs on 12 hits in five innings. Three relievers combined to allow one unearned run over three innings for the Panthers.
Coady had a game-high three hits for UW-Stevens Point, while four other players had two hits each. Carlson knocked in two runs and McHugh scored twice for the Pointers.
Trevor Montgomery and Travis Ralls each had two hits for Greenville, which was held to seven hits in the game.
