The Maryville College baseball team completed the sweep of USA South foe Berea College with an 11-1 win over the Mountaineers on Saturday evening.
MC starter Ricky Ward (4-0) earned the win on the mound after scattering four hits over six complete innings. He did not allow an earned run. Joe Logsden and Evan Heffner posted hitless innings before senior Zach Price closed the door on the USA South sweep.
Maryville tallied a trio of runs in the second inning when Hayden Hollingsworth sent Caleb Adams plateward after grounding into a double play. Catcher Evan Ezell, who earlier walked, scampered home following a wild pitch. Alden Wright placed a two-out single between the right fielder and second baseman to send Andrew Henry home to make the score 3-0 after a pair of innings.
The Scots added a pair of runs in the fourth when Patrick Messinger doubled down the left field line before scoring on an Andrew Henry push bunt RBI base hit. Henry would later score on an Alden Wright RBI single down the right field line.
MC's bats broke loose in the eighth. Caleb Adams scored McKenzie Jackson on a single to left field. Derek Hurt and Logan Hayes scored on wild pitches before Zachary Santora recorded his first collegiate hit and RBI sending Hayes home. Santora later scored on a McKenzie Jackson RBI double.
Berea tallied their lone run in the ninth when Tanner Crowe singled to left field sending Devin Martin home.
Maryville's 16-hit attack was paced by Andrew Henry (4-for-5). Patrick Messinger, Alden Wright, and Johnny Carpenter each added a pair of hits.
The victory is No. 100 for MC Head Coach Cody Church in only his fourth season in guiding the Scots diamondmen.
Maryville (26-5, 10-5 USA South) will travel to Spalding University on Tuesday, April 3rd before a key USA South road trip to Piedmont College.
