April 10, 2013 Baseball Falls in Extra Innings to NYU-Poly OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team lost a tough one in extra innings on Wednesday as the Bloodhounds lost to NYU-Poly on a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eleventh inning, 5-4, at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. The loss leaves John Jay at 2-17 overall this season. With one out and a runner on third, NYU Poly's Ceasar Murillas lifted a fly ball to the outfield that was deep enough to score the run as Julian Santulli raced home to win it for the Blue Jays. The game was well pitched by both teams as the Bloodhounds pitching combined for 16 strikeouts, while the Blue Jays fanned eight. And the game saw 14 errors, including nine by NYU Poly. NYU Poly took the initial lead with a run in the bottom of the first. The Blue Jays held that advantage into the top of the fourth when the Bloodhounds scored three to take a 3-1 lead. First, Billy Moran scored when Nico Rivera reached on a Blue Jay error. Then later, Steve Donato came in to score on a double by Freddy Rivera. The Bloodhounds rounded out the scoring when Rivera scored on a ground out by Nick Gioia. But NYU Poly answered with three run of its own in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead as the Blue Jays led 4-3 after the fourth inning. John Jay tied the game in the top of the seventh when a single by Ronald Barillas scored Luca Altamirano. Barillas and Steven Donato led John Jay with two hits each. Trevor Johnson suffered the loss in relief after going 2.2 innings and allowing one run on one hit. He struck out four. Chris Cracchiolo and Braylin Perez pitched four innings each earlier in the game and struck out six batters each.
