May 14, 2018 – Five North Central College baseball players were named to the 2018 All-College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) teams, while the Cardinals also swept Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and Coach of the Year.

This marks the first time in CCIW history that a team has swept all four of the top postseason awards, as Michael Mateja and Mike Wisz were named Co-Players of the Year. The award is the second-straight for Mateja, becoming just the third player in conference history to earn the award in consecutive seasons and the first player in program history to receive back-to-back Player of the Year awards.

Wisz was also named Newcomer of the year, while Russell Hoh was named Pitcher of the Year and head coach Ed Mathey earned his second-straight CCIW Coach of the Year award, guiding the Cardinals to their fourth-straight CCIW regular season title and back-to-back CCIW Tournament championships.

Mateja was named First Team All-CCIW for the second-consecutive season, leading the conference with an on-base percentage of .529 and 21 walks, while ranking second in batting average (.416), slugging percentage (.674), runs scored (32) and doubles (13).

Wisz broke the CCIW single-season RBI record with 47 runs batted in over the 24-game conference schedule, while leading the conference in batting (.430), slugging (.760), hits (43), doubles (14) and total bases (76).  His 72 RBI on the season currently lead all NCAA Division III players and rank second in school history, just two shy of the single-season record set by Ken Ritter '88 in 1986.

Hoh finished 5-0 over his five conference starts with a miniscule earned run average of 1.07, striking out 22 batters over 33.2 innings with just three walks to earn his first All-CCIW nod. Hoh also won his only start of the CCIW Tournament, pushing his record to a perfect 6-0 against CCIW opponents this season.

Mateja and Wisz become the 10th players in program history to earn CCIW Player of the Year, while Wisz is now the second Cardinal to earn CCIW Newcomer of the Year since the installment of the award in 2013.  Hoh is the second CCIW Pitcher of the Year in program history since the conference began awarding separate player and pitcher of the year awards.

For Mathey, this marks his fifth CCIW Coach of the Year nod, while also earning Central Region Coach of the Year in 2016 and 2017.

Freshman catcher Rob Marinec was also named First Team All-CCIW, finishing second to Wisz in RBI over conference play, driving in 29 in conference play. Marinec hit .356 during the conference slate with three homeruns.

Eric Outlaw was named to the second team, hitting .337 while reaching base at a .427 clip with one homerun and eight doubles.

North Central will travel to Duluth, Minnesota for the 2018 NCAA Division III Midwest Region Championship, making the third-straight appearance in the regional.  The second-seeded Cardinals will square off against fifth-seeded University of Dubuque on Thursday, May 17 at 3 p.m. at Frank Wade Municipal Stadium.
