CWRU Baseball Heads South to Lexington, SC for Eight Games in as Many Days

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team will travel to Lexington County Stadium in Lexington, South Carolina for a stretch of eight games in as many days from March 10th through March 17th, with games against Roger Williams University, Trinity College (Conn.), fifth-ranked SUNY Cortland, and the University of Rochester.

Lexington County Stadium
All games will be played at Lexington County Stadium in Lexington, South Carolina.  The field serves as the home of the Lexington County Blowfish of the Coastal Plain League.  For more information on the stadium, go to http://www.goblowfishbaseball.com/.

CWRU Spartans
The Spartans opened their 2018 season last weekend, going 3-1 during a series of four games against third-ranked Washington and Jefferson College and Allegheny College in Washington, Pennsylvania.  Case Western Reserve hit .233 as a team over the four games and averaged 4.75 runs per game, while pitching to a 3.41 team ERA and allowing opponents to hit just .203.  At the plate, junior infielder Rocco Maue led the team with a .444 average, scoring four runs, collecting three doubles, and stealing a pair of bases on as many attempts.  Freshman infielder Jacob Lott added a .308 performance with a pair of doubles.  On the mound, junior Mark Gross pitched to a 1.12 ERA and struck out seven batters in his start against Washington and Jefferson, while senior Liam Killingstad, junior Corey Brown and sophomore Scott Kutschke all contributed scoreless outings in relief.

Head Coach Matt Englander is in his 12th season with the team, and will enter the campaign with a 261-204-2 career record.  The 2014 Mideast Region Coach of the Year and winningest coach in program history has led the team to eight-consecutive seasons of 24 or more victories, two UAA Championships and four NCAA Tournament appearances, while notching a .646 winning percentage over the last eight seasons.  Englander is assisted by Nick Callahan and Branden Stucky and Andrew Rossman.

Spartan Notes

  • During the team's first four games of the season, Liam Killingstad, Corey Brown and Scott Kutschke combined to pitch 13.0 shutout innings out of the bullpen.  The group allowed a five hits and five walks, while striking out 11 batters.
  • Jacob Lott has opened his collegiate career by hitting safety in all four games so far.  He was the only CWRU player to collect at least one hit in each game.
  • Rocco Maue registered at least two hits in three of the four games last weekend, including a pair of three-hit efforts.  Junior outfielder Jacob Pestel had a pair of multiple-hit games during the team's opening weekend as well, and is hitting .286 overall.
  • CWRU went 6-0 last season when scoring 10 runs or more, and has won 56-straight games when scoring 10 runs or more, dating back to April 17, 2011.
  • CWRU hitters were two-for-three with the bases loaded during the opening weekend, including a bases-loaded triple in the 11th innings by junior catcher Tyler Wypiszenski during the team's win over Washington and Jefferson.  Spartan hitters have hit .297 when leading off an inning so far this season.
