Wheaton records eighth-straight 30-win campaign with 9-2 win at Southern Maine

PORTLAND, Maine - Junior Sean Ryan (Norton, Mass./Norton) drove in three runs to propel the No. 7 Wheaton College baseball team to its 10th straight win, a 9-2 triumph over Southern Maine in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at the USM Baseball Stadium.

Junior Eric Jensen (Gorham, N.H./Gorham) and freshman Apolinar De la Cruz (Providence, R.I./Classical) each had three hits for Wheaton (30-4), which reached the 30-win plateau for the eighth-consecutive season. The Huskies fall to 16-15 with the loss.

The Lyons tacked on three runs in the first inning to grab the early lead. Senior Hal Landers (Salem, N.H./Salem) led off the game with a single, moved to second on a single by Jensen, and scored on a groundout by Ryan. Senior Dan Haugh (Andover, Mass./St. John's Prep) followed with a sac fly to bring in Jensen. Following a double by De la Cruz, junior Dan Gusovsky (Andover, Mass./Andover) singled through the left side to plate him and make it 3-0.

Jensen reached on an error and scored on a single by Ryan in the fifth to give Wheaton a 4-0 lead. In the fifth, an RBI double by Landers, an RBI single from Jensen, and a sac fly from Ryan extended the Lyons lead to 7-0. USM senior David Ricker (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) got the Huskies on the board with an RBI double in the sixth, but the Lyons got the run back in the seventh on a sac fly by freshman Kevin Foley (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug).   

Sophomore Forrest Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner) singled in the Huskies second run of the afternoon in the seventh to cut Wheaton's lead to 8-2. Senior John Keating (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) capped the scoring with an RBI single in the ninth for the Lyons.

Wheaton sophomore Mike McGinnis (Mashpee, Mass./Mashpee) retired the first 17 batters he faced and worked six innings of three-hit ball to improve to 4-0. He allowed two runs, struck out four, and did not walk a batter. Senior Dustin Stanton (Cornish, Maine/Sacopee Valley) allowed seven hits and six runs (five earned) in 3.1 innings for the Huskies. He did not walk a batter and struck out three to fall to 0-3 on the season.

De la Cruz has now hit safely in 31 of the Lyons 34 games this season while Ryan has at least one hit in 29 of 34 contests in 2012. With a pair of wins over Southern Maine this season, the Lyons improve to 20-9-1 all-time against the Huskies.

Wheaton returns to action on Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. contest against Endicott at Sidell Stadium. The Huskies host Husson Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
