LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team improved to 7-1 at home with a 9-5 victory over Southern Virginia on Thursday evening at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

The Generals (8-8) moved to .500 for the first time all season with the come-from-behind victory, while the Knights fell to 2-10 on the year.

W&L trailed, 3-2, entering the seventh inning before scoring seven runs in the frame to take a 9-3 lead en route to the win.

After a leadoff groundout to begin the seventh, sophomore Keegan Dolan (Bethesda, Md./Landon) drew a one-out walk and stole second base. First-year pinch-hitter Taylor Rowe (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) then singled to put runners on first and second. Junior Joe Scalzo (Ridgefield, Conn./Brunswick) followed with a single to center that got away from SVU senior Andrew Snider (Lancaster, Calif./Antelope Valley College) allowing Rowe to score from first and Scalzo to take second as the Blue and White took a 4-2 lead.

A bloop single by senior Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) once again put runners on first and second and junior Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) hammered a double to left center that plated two more runs and pushed W&L's lead to 6-2. Junior Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside) made it 7-2 with an RBI single and then scored on another SVU fielding error making it 8-2 in favor of the Generals.

Junior Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) scored on a wild pitch to cap the Generals' scoring and make it a 9-3 game heading to the eighth inning.

In the eighth, sophomore Brandon Alexander (Oakley, Calif./Freedom) trimmed the Knights' deficit to 9-4 with an RBI single. Junior Dale Brown (Mesa, Ariz./Highland) drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs to inch SVU to within four runs at 9-5. However, senior Lee Tackett (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) induced sophomore Mitch Stevenson (Muskogee, Okla./Muskogee) to pop out to end the threat.

Southern Virginia had taken a 3-1 lead in the third inning on an RBI single by junior Tyler Cox (Forest, Miss./Forest) and a two-run single by senior Trager Hintze (Purcell, Okla./Snow Canyon).

Sophomore Nate Plein (El Cajon, Calif./St. Augustine) picked up the win for W&L  to move to 2-0 on the year. One of five relief pitchers for W&L, he tossed a scoreless seventh, allowing a single hit with two strikeouts.
