#1 Heidelberg Off to Best Start in Program History
Port Charlotte, Fla. – March 15, 2011 – The Heidelberg University baseball team, under the guidance of 12th-year head coach Matt Palm, is off to its best start in school history after posting a 4-0 victory over Plattsburgh State University in its final game at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. The win improved the Berg to a perfect 10-0 overall, which marks the first time in the history of the program that the year began with 10 consecutive victories. Following the setback SUNY Plattsburgh stands at 3-4.
Prior to the start of the game, the Berg was voted no. 1 in the nation according to D3Baseball.com for the third straight week. Heidelberg received 21 of a possible 25 first-place votes. Heidelberg also sits atop the nation according to the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
Heidelberg plated a run apiece in four separate innings. In the end, Heidelberg Ricardo Lizcano (Toledo, Ohio / Roy C. Start) led the way with two RBI, while Willie Brechun (Canton, Ohio / Canton Central Catholic) and Jordan Martin (Powell, Ohio / Olentangy) knocked in one run apiece.
Overall Heidelberg finished with nine hits. Andrew Buelow (Marysville, Mich. / Marysville), Brechun and Lizcano each had two hits apiece. Buelow also scored twice.
Sylvester Nino (Willard, Ohio / Willard) got the start and went 7.0 innings. He threw a four-hitter, while striking out eight to improve to 2-0 on the year. Zach O'Driscoll (Hudson, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) threw the final two innings to preserve the win. O'Driscoll gave up one hit, while striking out one en route to his first collegiate save.
Martin broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning with a RBI groundout for Heidelberg. Martin knocked in Zach Colatruglio (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) who reached the base paths on a single to left field.
The trio of Buelow, Martin and Lizcano teamed up to put a run on the board for Heidelberg in the fifth and seventh innings. Buelow reached base, only to be moved over by Martin on a sacrifice bunt. Lizcano stepped up to the plate and registered an RBI double and a RBI single in consecutive at bats to extend Heidelberg's lead to 3-0.
Heidelberg closed out its scoring in the eighth with a RBI single up the middle by Brechun to score Gar Keen (Sparta, Ohio / Highland), who led the inning off with a double to right field.
