Baseball Splits Home Opener Against UW-Stout
Apr 14, 2007
Press Release posted by uww Permalink
The UW-Whitewater men’s baseball team hosted UW-Stout in a doubleheader Saturday and walked off the field with a split, winning the first game 8-1 and losing the second 7-3. The Warhawks now sit at 10-8 overall and 3-3 in the WIAC while UW-Stout is 12-11 and 4-6.

A four run fifth inning propelled the Warhawks past the Blue Devils in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader. Cory Trepanier (sophomore, Oconto) led off the inning with a double and Ben Prather (junior, Schaumburg, Ill./Conant) followed with a single. Billy Johnson (junior, Kenosha/Tremper) then reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases. Bill Gorman (senior, Wauwatosa/East) then singled bringing home both Trepanier and Prather. The Warhawks scored two more runs in the inning to take the lead 4-1.

The Warhawks scored two more runs in both the sixth and eighth innings for the final score of 8-1. Billy Johnson hit his first home run of the year in the top of the eighth. Other offensive leaders for the Warhawks included Tom Corcoran (junior, Rochester, MN) who went three for five in the game with two RBI and Gorman who went two for three, scoring a run and knocking four home.

It was a combined effort on the mound that stymied the UW-Stout offense. Jay Grutzmacher (senior, Mukwonago), Adam Dominick (junior, Waukesha/West) and Randy Johnson (junior, Kenosha/Tremper) combined to hold the Blue Devils to seven hits and one run. The win was awarded to Dominick who pitched four innings of relief and struck out two batters.

Game two started with a bang as both teams notched a solo home run in their respective half of the first inning. The Warhawks’ Jeff Donovan hit a Rob Heller (senior, Coon Valley) pitch over the center field wall to score the Warhawks first run. Stout notched a run in the fourth and four in the fifth on four hits and two Whitewater errors.

The Warhawks pulled to within 6-3, scoring two in the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn't enough as the Blue Devils plated one more run in the top of the seventh to complete the scoring and going on to win 7-3.

Mike Jacobson (junior, Oak Creek), who started the year with four straight wins, suffered his first loss of the year for the Warhawks. Rob Heller upped his mark to 4-0 with the win for the Blue Devils.

Greg Smolinski (DH) went 3x4 for Stout, and Erik Johnson (RF) and Ryan Stace (3B) both contributed two runs batted in. Thomas Donovan (1B, sophomore, Wauwatosa/East) went 2x4 for the Warhawks.

The Warhawks will face the Blue Devils again tomorrow, April 15, in a twinbill that is scheduled to start at noon at Prucha Field.
