Wabash Ends Wooster's Win Streak at 27, Edging Scots 3-2
Apr 15, 2007
WOOSTER, Ohio – Wabash College’s Joey Niezer pitched a two-hitter Sunday afternoon, ending The College of Wooster’s school record winning streak at 27 games, as the Little Giants took early 1-0 and 3-1 leads and then held off some late threats by the No. 1 ranked Fighting Scots for a 3-2 triumph at a cold, overcast Art Murray Field.
Wooster (27-1), which easily swept Wabash 8-0, 6-0 Saturday, ends up six victories short of the NCAA Div. III record for best start to a season, held by Johns Hopkins University, which opened the 2004 campaign 33-0.
The Little Giants (11-20-1) put the Scots in a hole in the top of the first. Kyle Rush began the game with a single up the middle, then stole second, and one batter later, scored on a Matt Dodaro single. Wooster starter John Warren (New Castle, Pa. / Union Area) averted further trouble, though, stranding runners on second and third with one out.
Without getting a hit in the bottom of the second inning, the Scots evened it up 1-1, however, Wabash’s Jake Thomas answered with a one-out, two-run homer to right during the third.
That would be all of the Little Giants’ offense, as Warren settled in, allowing just two more hits after the third inning. Warren allowed seven base knocks in all and walked a pair while striking out seven over six innings of work, and then Mark Miller got all nine batters he faced out, including setting four down on strikes.
Wooster’s bats couldn’t figure out Niezer, though. The Scots did threaten several times late, including in the seventh when Pat Christensen drew a walk and Oliver Enos was hit by a pitch to start that frame. The next two batters popped up and struck out, and then Shaun Swearingen came through, dropping a single into right field to score Christensen.
Enos ended up being stranded on third, and Wooster also left runners in scoring position in the eighth and ninth.
Niezer, who improved to 3-2, yielded just the single to Swearingen and a Sean Karpen infield single in the fourth, but he did have four hit by pitches and two walks, which gave the Scots some scoring opportunities.
Wooster will look to start a new winning streak on Wednesday, as the Scots are currently scheduled to host Muskingum College (17-7) that day at 4 p.m.
