NORTON, MA- The seventh-ranked Wheaton College baseball team completed its 14-game homestand on a high note Saturday, as the Lyons retained sole possession of first place in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) with a twinbill sweep over Clark University, 11-5 and 13-2 at Sidell Stadium.
Ranked seventh nationally and first in New England according to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), the Lyons improved their overall record to 21-7 and conference mark to 8-2. Winners in 20 of its last 23 games, Wheaton posted double figures in both ends of a doubleheader for the second straight Saturday. Clark fell to 9-15 on the season and 2-6 in conference play.
Wheaton used two runs in the first inning of the opener, three in the third and a combined six in the fourth through sixth frames to build a commanding 11-2 advantage. Seniors Travis Anthoine (Portland, ME/Portland) and Brandon Leonard (Brockton, MA/Brockton) each scored in the first while sophomore Robert Foote (Walpole, MA/Walpole) was beating out a double-play ball.
In the third, Foote and sophomore Nick Pecora (Highland Park, NJ/Immaculata) recorded RBI singles, while senior Adam Laplante (Harwich, MA/Harwich) scored on a wild pitch. Junior Scott Guillerault (South Portland, ME/South Portland) drove in a run in the fourth, and the Lyons combined for five runs on five hits in the fifth and sixth frames. Anthoine, Laplante, Leonard, sophomore Karl Olson (Bethel, ME/Gould Academy) and freshman Paul Malaguti (Andover, MA/Andover) plated a run apiece in those innings.
Clark finished the scoring with three runs in the seventh, as Wheaton junior Louie Bernardini (Gray, ME/Gray-New Gloucester) improved to a perfect 5-0 with three strikeouts and two walks through 6.2 innings. He allowed five runs, four of which were earned, and nine hits. Classmate Keith Pescosolido (Newton, MA/Newton North) recorded the final out in the seventh. Laplante paced Wheaton's 11-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and a double, Anthoine went 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and double, Foote drove in a pair, and Leonard scored twice with a triple and stolen base.

Junior pitcher Miles Whitlock (Augusta, ME/Cony) took the loss, giving up eight earned runs on eight hits with one strikeout and five walks in 4.2 innings.
The Lyons snapped a 2-2 tie in game two with a seven-run third and never looked back. Silva singled home a run in the first for a quick 1-0 Clark edge, but junior Jake Yagjian (Brewster, MA/Nauset Regional) answered with a run-scoring groundout to short in the home half. The Cougars retook the lead in the second on freshman Stephen DeMartino's (East Haven, CT/Notre Dame) RBI single to short, however the Lyons once again responded with a run in the bottom half, this time coming on a run-scoring single from Pecora.
Laplante highlighted Wheaton's huge third with a two-run single down the right field line. Leonard doubled in a run and later scored on a wild pitch, Olson and Pecora each singled in a run, and Anthoine's double capped the seven-run frame. The Lyons tacked on four insurance runs in the eighth. Foote, Laplante, Leonard and Pecora all posted multiple-hit performances in the win, while junior southpaw Josh Moore (Manchester, NH/Manchester Memorial) earned the win after fanning three and walking one with two runs on four hits in seven innings.
Wheaton hits the road on Tuesday for the first time this month, as the Blue and White resumes conference play at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) at 3:30 p.m. The Lyons last played away from Norton on March 30.
