Wentworth Earns Berth in TCCC Title Game for First Time Since 1996 Season
May 03, 2008
Press Release posted by Wentworth Tech Permalink
BRISTOL, R.I. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team pounded out 20 hits, including a school record five home runs, and got a strong, complete game outing from sophomore Mo Gardner (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) as the Leopards downed Roger Williams, 9-3, to advance to their first The Commonwealth Coast Conference title game since 1996. Earlier in the day the Hawks set up the day’s second game by handing Wentworth its first loss of the tournament, 9-8, after rallying from an 8-3 deficit.

The fourth-seeded Leopards tallied two runs in the top of the second when senior Jarrett Ament (Boylston, Mass.) delivered a two-out RBI single which scored sophomore Anthony Carbone (Goshen, Conn.), who had led off the inning with a single. Freshman Jake McManus (Hopkinton, N.H.) followed that an RBI single of his own, scoring freshman Ben Danker (Branford, Conn.). Sophomore Pete Oggeri (Sandy Hook, Conn.) walked to load the bases, but the Hawks got a strikeout to end the inning. An inning later Wentworth would increase its lead to 3-0 on Anthony Carbone’s fifth home run of the season.

Wentworth doubled its lead in the fourth inning when Ament led off the inning with his first career home run and got two more when junior Nick Cunningham (Pembroke, Mass.) hit his third homer of the season, which cleared the left field fence. In the fifth inning Oggeri singled in Ament, who had lead off the inning being hit by a pitch, and increased the Leopard lead to 7-0.

Roger Williams, the tournament’s top seed, had a chance in the home half of the inning to get on the board when freshman Justin Reyes (Lincoln, R.I.) led off with a single to left. The next batter, sophomore Grant Bolin (Simsbury, Conn.) delivered a fly ball to left that would be ruled a ground-rule double after going through the outfield fence. Both runners would be stranded in scoring position when Gardner induced a pop out, fly out, and pop out to end the threat and the inning.

Senior Gerald Marquis (Marlborough, Conn.) hit Wentworth’s fourth home run of the game to deep center in the top of the seventh, extending the lead to 8-0. The Hawks broke into the scoring column in the home half of the inning when Reyes, who led off the inning with a double, would steal third and come home to score an unearned run on an errant throw.

The eighth inning saw the Leopards increase their margin to eight runs (9-1) when Danker hit his second home run of the season. Wentworth had runners on first and second with one out, but a double play would end the inning. Roger Williams plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth when Bolin hit his fifth home run of the season, which also Plated Reyes.

Gardner improved to 4-0 on the season, allowing three runs (one earned), scattering nine hits, walking three and striking out four. Offensively, Anthony Carbone was 4-for-6, while junior Mike Roberts (Chelmsford, Mass.), Danker, and Ament each collected three hits.

Freshman P.J. Gouthro (Walpole, Mass.) was tagged with the loss (2-4), allowing six runs on 12 hits, walking one, and striking out three in 3.2 innings of work. Reyes had three hits for the Hawks, with Bolin driving in two runs.

Roger Williams forced the second game of the day when the Hawks scored four runs in the seventh inning to take a 9-8 lead and would get out of a first-and-third jam in the eighth inning. The Hawks began the game by tallying two runs in the first inning on a two-run single from junior Alex Perry (Glastonbury, Conn.), which scored freshman Matt Berte (Marlborough, Mass.) and junior Jamie Dahill (South Boston, Mass.). Roger Williams would load the bases with one out, but sophomore starter Chris Carbone (Goshen, Conn.) got back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

Wentworth took the lead in the second inning by scoring three runs with two outs. McManus delivered an RBI single, scoring Papuga who had led off the inning with a double and Oggeri hit his fifth home run of the season. After Roger Williams tied the score with a run in the last of the second on a leadoff home run by Bolin, The Leopards took a 7-3 lead with a four-run third inning. Danker had a two-run single, Papuga drove in a run with a single, and McManus tacked on a run on a sacrifice fly.

Junior Phil Costello (Medford, Mass.) scored an unearned run when McManus reached on a throwing error in the top of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 8-3 before the hosts began their comeback in the last half of the inning. Perry pulled the Hawks to within 8-4 with a solo home run, his sixth of the season, coming with one out. Freshman Tony Verrochi (Norwood, Mass.) singled to left with two outs and moved to second on a pinch hit single from junior Andrew Haycock (Medfield, Mass.). Bolin struck out swinging, but reached first on a wild pitch to load the bases. Junior Bill Lambert (Hanover, Mass.) hit a ground ball in the infield, but an out could not be recorded, bringing in Verrochi and trimming the lead to 8-5. Chris Carbone would leave the bases full of Hawks when he induced a ground ball back to him to end the inning.

Carbone would give up three consecutive hits to start the sixth inning and was relieved by junior Matt Chymbor (Meriden, Conn.), who got the next three batters to fly out, ending Roger Williams’ threat. The seventh inning, however, would see the Hawks score four times to take the lead. With one out Lambert homered to left, which was followed by a Berte walk. A groundout by Dahill placed Berte in scoring position and he would move to third when junior Kevin Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) reached on an error. Perry delivered an RBI single, scoring Berte, moving Simpson to third, and cutting the lead to 8-6. Sophomore Matt Vezina (Uxbridge, Mass.) came on to relieve Chymbor and gave up an RBI single to freshman Zach Porter (Middleboro, Mass.). Verrochi would single and advance to third on an outfield error. In the process he drove in Perry with the go-ahead run, but the inning ended when Porter was cut down at the plate.

With two outs in the eighth inning Oggeri walked and went to third on a single by Roberts. The Hawks brought in their closer, sophomore Billy Dunn (Fiskdale, Mass.), who induced a groundout to end the threat. Vezina gave up a leadoff walk to Reyes which was followed by singles from Bolin and Lambert before stranding all three when he induced a pop out, sandwiched between two strikeouts. Dunn would set the Leopards down in order in the ninth, preserving the win, and forcing the second game.

Senior Mike Malcolm (Brockton, Mass.) picked up his second relief win of the week to improve to 6-0. In 5.2 innings of work, he allowed an unearned run on two hits, walked three, and struck out one in 5.2 innings of work. He had come on in relief of freshman Sam Podbelski (East Greenwich, R.I.), who gave up seven runs on eight hits in two-plus innings of work. Dunn notched his 10th save of the season with 1.1 perfect innings. Perry was 4-for-5 with three RBI at the plate.

Chymbor falls to 6-3 with the loss, as he allowed four runs (one earned) on two hits in 1.2 innings of work. Chris Carbone had given up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits, walked two, and struck out six in five-plus innings of work. Vezina allowed four hits, walked one, and struck out a pair in 1.1 innings. At the plate, Cunningham and Papuga each had two hits.

Wentworth, 30-12, advances to its first conference title game since the 1996 season tomorrow at 1:00 p.m., when the Leopards will travel to third-seeded Western New England (30-11). The Golden Bears dispatched sixth-seeded Salve Regina to reach the finals in their first season in TCCC. In the regular season, WNEC swept the conference doubleheader between the two schools, 4-3, and 14-2. The winner of tomorrow’s game receives and automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament.
