Coe knocks out top-seeded Loras
CEDAR RAPIDS – Third-seeded Coe College kept itself alive in the 2009 Iowa Conference baseball championships Friday, May 8, eliminating top-seeded Loras 12-7.
The Kohawks (24-18), locked in a 1-1 tie with the Duhawks (25-14) through three frames, reeled off a seven-run rally from the fourth through seventh frames to lead 8-5 through six and a half. However, Loras answered with two in the bottom of the seventh to make it 8-7. The score remained that way until the ninth when Coe hit the league’s co-conference champions with a four-spot to reach the eventual final.
Six Coe hitters finished with multiple-hit contests to bolster a 17-hit attack. Infielders Tyler McAllister and Ryan Velvick led the group with three hits each and also contributed a home run apiece.
Loras’ offense was topped by infielder Clark Egdorf and catcher Josh Schroeder. They each turned in two-hit games.
Coe advanced into another elimination game Friday, at 7 p.m., against fifth-seeded Buena Vista.
