May 07, 2009
CEDAR RAPIDS – Bolstered by impressive offensive displays, the number three and four seeds turned in wins in the opening games of the 2009 Iowa Conference baseball Championships Thursday, May 7.
Coe (23-17) got out of the gate quickly against sixth-seeded Simpson, scoring eight runs over the first three innings to pave the way for a 10-3 win. The attack was more than enough for starting pitcher Ryan Nicholson. The senior went the distance, surrendering only six hits and two earned runs. Designated hitter John Logan and right fielder Adam Nisenson led six Kohawks who turned in multiple-hit games as they each ended with three hits. First baseman Pat Richmond added two doubles and two RBIs.
Simpson (19-22) was led on offense by center fielder Corey Rasmussen and catcher Curt Bjork, both of whom had two hits.
Wartburg (23-17) turned in 12 hits and took advantage of seven Buena Vista errors en route to a 12-4 win. Catcher A.J. Lewis guided the offense with three hits and three runs scored. Center fielder Patrick Grau drilled a home run and finished with two hits. Senior pitcher Jerrold Martijn went the distance, striking out 12 and giving up only four hits.
Buena Vista (26-13) received RBIs from shortstop Brad Blum, left fielder Michael Hoffman, and designated hitter Devon Archibald.
The Kohawks moved on to face second-seeded Luther at 6 p.m. Thursday, while the Knights moved on to a 9 p.m. game against top-seeded Loras. Buena Vista and Simpson open Friday’s play at 10 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium and Perfect Game Field with the first elimination game of the tournaments.
