Warhawks Win Seventh WIAC Title in Nine Years
May 05, 2008
Press Release posted by UW-Whitewater Permalink
Aaron Dott struck out eleven and got thirteen runs of support in a game one win over UW-Stevens Point Monday in Whitewater. The win clinched at least a share of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season title. A game two victory meant the Warhawks could have the title outright, accomplished with a 15-8 win, to give UW-W its sixth title outright in the last eight years.

After a three-run first inning by both teams in game two, UW-Whitewater put the bats to work to defeat the Pointers and clinch the WIAC title. The Warhawks finished the WIAC regular season with a 20-4 record and earned the number one seed in the WIAC tournament beginning Friday, May 9 in Wisconsin at Witter Field in Wisconsin Rapids.

In game one, UW-W got on the scoreboard early when a Kevin Zalnis single plated Ben Kuhlmann and a Jordan Stine single plated Zalnis.

Point answered in the top of the third when a pitch from Aaron Dott squirted past the catcher to score Kyle Cummings. The Warhawks answered that run with one of their own in the bottom half of the third on a fielder's choice that scored Tom Corcoran to make it 3-1 Whitewater.

Zalnis hit a solo shot to start the fifth for UW-W, and Stine singled to drive in Ben Prather later in the inning, upping the margin to 5-1. Point responded with two runs in the top of the sixth, but a five-run bottom half of the inning by UW-W settled the issue. Zalnis hit another solo home run in the inning and right fielder Joe Munn hit a two-run blast. The Warhawks scored three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to go up by ten and end the game early by the run deficit rule.

The win kept Dott perfect for the season with a record of 6-0. Zalnis went 4X5 driving in five and Stine went 3X4 driving in two.

Game two started fast with both teams notching three runs in their respective half of the first inning. A couple of wild pitches and hit batsmen aided the Warhawks in their three-run first.

The Warhawks took the lead in the bottom of the third on a two-out single by Munn that scored two. Mike Kenseth then started the bottom of the fourth with a single. He then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Pointer catcher Steve Considine. Ben Kuhlmann followed by hitting a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Kenseth and gave the Warhawks a 6-3 lead.

UW-SP threatened with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth and two outs, but senior pitcher Mike Jacobson got Considine to ground into an inning ending play to maintain their three run lead.

A Stine two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth, part of a six run frame, gave UW-W a five-run lead, 12-3.

Stevens Point's Kyle Cummings hit a solo and Brandon Scheidler a three-run home run in the top of the sixth to narrow the game to 12-7.

Although it didn't change the outcome, Whitewater scored single runs in the sixth, seventh and eigth, and Point one in the eighth to conclude the scoring. The title is the Warhawks' seventh in the last nine seasons (shared in 2000).

Munn went 4x5 for the Warhawks, also scoring three times. Scheidler was 3x6, with three RBI's, to lead the Pointers.

Number one seed UW-W (33-6, 20-4) will face number four seed UW-La Crosse (18-18, 11-12) in the first round of the double elimination WIAC tournament Friday, May 9 in Wisconsin Rapids at 10:00. Advance tickets are on sale by calling the UW-Whitewater athletic office at 262-472-4661.
