Warhawks and Pioneers Put on the Pads
Apr 21, 2007
Press Release posted by UW-Whitewater Permalink
In what appeared to be a preview of next fall's gridiron matchup, the UW-Whitewater (13-11, 6-6 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) and UW-Platteville (10-14, 3-8) baseball teams split a doubleheader at Kendall Murray Field in Platteville Saturday, with the Warhawks winning game one 13-10 and the Pioneers taking game two 19-12.

In the two games the teams combined for 54 runs, 61 hits, 15 errors, 13 hit batsmen and used 13 pitchers. As high as those numbers are they could have been higher since the teams combined for 37 runners left on base.

With both teams putting up numbers almost every inning the difference in game one was an eight run eighth for the Warhawks. The big blows in the inning were a two run double by Jordan Stine (CF, sophomore, Merrill) and a two run home run by Tom Corcoran (DH, junior, Rochester, Minn.). Stine had three runs batted in for the game, and Jeff Donovan (RF, freshman, Wauwatosa/East) went 3x4 with three RBI's and two runs scored. Platteville's Ross Bennett (1B, junior, Mequon) went 3x4 with a game high four runs batted in. Tom Severson (L, freshman, Appleton/North) picked up his first collegiate victory with three innings of relief work.

Whitewater and Platteville began whaling on each other from the get go in game two. The score was 6-5 Whitewater after two innings, and 9-9 after four. Platteville continued on that pace, adding four in the fifth and a solo run in the seventh to make it 14-9. UW-W pulled within two, 14-12, with three in the eighth, but Platteville answered with five in the bottom half of the inning to close the scoring.

Six Warhawks had two hits in the game, and Platteville's Scott Dybecik (CF, senior, Madison/LaFollette) went 4x5 with four runs scored and four driven in. Two of Dybevik's hits were home runs, one a double, for eleven total bases in the game.

The last time that UW-W scored 12 (or more) runs in a game and lost was March 21, 1998 when Muskingum College defeated the Warhawks 17-13 in Cape Coral, Florida. The last time Whitewater gave up 19 (or more) runs was May 6, 2005 in a 21-8 loss to UW-Stevens Point.

UW-W will play at Platteville again Sunday. The Warhawks' next home date will be Thursday, May 2 with Marian College visiting Prucha Field.
