Warhawks Take Series Against UW-Stout 3-1
Apr 15, 2007
Press Release posted by UW-Whitewater Permalink
After splitting with the visiting Blue Devils on Saturday, the Warhawks swept UW-Stout on Sunday winning 6-5 and 9-2. The wins improved Whitewater’s overall record to 12-8 and their conference record to 5-3. The Blue Devils dropped to 12-13 on the season and 4-8 in the conference.

In game one the Warhawks came from behind with some late inning heroics to defeat the Blue Devils 6-5. With the Blue Devils leading 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning the Warhawks put two runs on the board to tie the game.

With two outs Mike Jacobson (junior, Oak Creek) stepped to the plate and started the rally with a single. Justin Dahmen (sophomore, Madison/Memorial) came on to pinch run for Jacobson and advanced to third on a Matt Schliewe (junior, Horicon) single. Sam Petrasko (freshman, Appleton/East) then came on to pinch run for Schliewe. Petrasko stole second to put the tying runs in scoring position. With Dahmen on third and Petrasko on second Jason Rutz (senior, New Berlin/West) stepped up and lined a single to score Dahmen; Petrasko advanced to third on the hit. The stage was then set for a double steal as Rutz thieved second and Petrasko stole home to tie the game. Billy Johnson (junior, Kenosha/Tremper) struck out to end the inning.

Stout was unable to break the tie in the top of the ninth as Kevin Harves (freshman, RSN, Ca.) sat down the only three batters he faced in the inning. In the bottom of the ninth Bill Gorman (senior, Wauwatosa/East) got things started with a double. Greg Harder (junior, Wakesha/West) then singled advancing Gorman to third. With a runner in scoring position Jordan Stine (sophomore, Merrill) stepped to the plate and smacked a double that would score Gorman to win the game.

Leading the way offensively for the Warhawks were Stine, 3 for 4 with two RBI; Jeff Donovan (freshman, Wauwatosa/East), 2 for 4 with one RBI; and Rutz, 2 for 4 with one RBI. Harves earned the win for UW-Whitewater while Matt Doornick suffered the loss for UW-Stout.

In game two the Warhawks took the early lead and never looking back, winning 9-2. A five run third was truly all the Warhawks needed to seal the victory. Singles by Harder, Stine, Jeff Donovan, and Thomas Corcoran (junior, Rochester, Mn.) got things started. With the bases loaded Kevin Zalnis (sophomore, Woodstock, Ill.) stepped to the plate and hit one over the right field fence for his first grand slam as a Warhawk. The homerun was his second of the season.

The Warhawks added three more runs in the fourth and one in the sixth to cap off their scoring for the second game. UW-Stout scored a run in each the fourth and ninth innings and totaled seven hits in the game.

Tony Wong (freshman, Appleton/West) struck out twelve in six innings giving up only five hits and one run to earn the win, his second of the season. On top of Zalnis' four RBI performance, Corcoran knocked in three on three of four from the plate and Jeff Donovan knocked in two going two for three.

The Warhawks will be at home again on April 18 to take on UW-Oshkosh in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm at Prucha Field.
