Platteville hands Oshkosh first WIAC loss
Apr 14, 2007
Press Release posted by UW-Platteville Permalink
UW-Platteville earned its first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win of the year, while handing league-leading UW-Oshkosh its first loss, 4-3 Saturday in Oshkosh. The Titans came back to win the second game, 2-1.

Matt Paulus hit a tie-breaking double in the top of the ninth, scoring pinch-runner Derrick Rice. Jay Lindner then stranded a man on second to earn the save. Corey Connolly was the winning pitcher, coming on to relieve starter Kyle Mack, who threw a strong six innings of six-hit ball. The Titans scored an unearned run off Connolly in the eighth, tying the score at 3-3.

Nick Aplin and Mike Kuhn had run-scoring singles in the Pioneer first. UWP did not get a hit from the third inning until Paulus's game-winning double.

Ross Bennett led off the second game with his fifth home run of the year, and Joe Lange almost made that run stand up the entire game. Lange went eight solid innings, allowing just six hits. In the eighth, the Titans Andy Newbauer doubled and scored on Derek Leighton's single and a throwing error. Mickey Fadness then singled up the middle to score Leighton with the go-ahead run. Adam Bretl struck out two of the three Pioneers he faced in the ninth for the complete-game win.

The Pioneers are now 7-10-1 overall and 1-4 in the WIAC, while the Titans are 15-5 overall and 9-1 in league play. The same teams meet tomorrow for two more games, beginning at noon at Tiedemann Field.
