LEXINGTON, Ky. - Transylvania rallied for five runs in the eighth inning Sunday, denying Rose-Hulman the Heartland Conference championship with a 5-3 win and clinching the fourth and final spot in next week's league tournament.
The Engineers (28-11, 15-6 HCAC) needed a win to get the HCAC title over Mt. St. Joseph. Instead, Ben Luking (8-1) pitched into the ninth inning, allowing just one earned run, and Ben Young drove in the game-winner during the decisive eighth inning. Brent Roach came on in the ninth to nail down the win and pick up his fifth save and his second in as many days over the Engineers.
Transy (28-10, 15-7 HCAC) needed a win or an Anderson loss to Bluffton to get into the tourney field. The Pioneers, the HCAC's top hitting club, had not been shut out this season but found themselves down 2-0 going into the bottom of the eighth and facing Derek Eitel, who came into the contest with a 2.00 earned run average and an 8-2 record.
Nick Moser opened the inning with a single and Evan Rhea's third hit of the game put runners on first and second for Tim Bauman, who sacrificed. Sam Dieters relieved Eitel and gave up a walk to Adam Clark to load the bases.
Mitch Kuczek got one run home with a slow grounder to short and Rhea tied the score when he came home on a wild pitch. Young followed with a double to bring in Kuczek and Jerrod Long's two-run single to right capped the scoring.
Luking went out for the ninth, having allowed just two unearned runs and four hits, striking out three and walking three. After a flyout, Luking allowed a walk and a double and Roach came in. Just as he did in Saturday's 5-3 win, he closed the door, getting two flies to center. The first became a sacrifice fly and was Rose-Hulman's final run.
Long had two hits as he and Rhea combined for five of Transy's nine hits.
It was also Senior Day at Marquard Field as fourth-year players Tim Bauman, Mitch Kuczek, Jerrod Long, Ben Luking, Nick Moser, and Brent Roach were honored prior to the first pitch. The group will be appearing in their third consecutive HCAC tournament with the winner receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
Transy completes its regular season at Thomas More on Monday. The HCAC tourney begins Thursday at Mt. St. Joseph with the Pioneers taking on the host Lions and Franklin meeting Rose-Hulman. Times will be announced.
