Texas-Tyler Represneted in Summer League All-Star Games
Jul 25, 2008
Press Release posted by Texas-Tyler Permalink
Sophomore outfielder Austin Newell and junior pitcher Lex Wolfe of The University of Texas at Tyler baseball team were both named to the Wolff Division All-Star team and will play in the 2008 Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League All-Star game on July 28. Patriots’ assistant coach Wes Davis will be making an all-star appearance as well, coaching the American team in the 2008 Coastal Plain League All-Star game on July 21.

Wolfe currently has a record of 1-2 for the Jersey Pilots with one save over 47.0 innings pitched. The right-hander from New Jersey has struck out 45 batters this summer and has allowed just 12 earned runs for an ERA of 2.30.

Wolfe’s UT Tyler teammate and ACBL rival, Newell, has had an equally outstanding season for the Lehigh Valley (Pa.) Catz. The Kennedale, Texas, native is batting .252 over 30 games with 29 hits, 10 runs and eight RBIs.

Further down the Atlantic Coast, Davis will be leading a team of his own into battle as a head coach in the Coastal Plain All-Star game. The Patriots’ assistant earned the honor by being one of two division winning coaches with the best record through the first half of CPL play. Davis led his Florence Red Wolves to a 20-7 first-half record, the South Division first-half championship and a spot in the upcoming ACBL play-offs.

Other Patriots keeping busy by swinging the bat this summer are junior Jeremy Harding (Houston, Texas), sophomore Michael Caggiano (Sugar Land, Texas) and freshman Nick Clifton (Gladewater, Texas). All three are involved in amateur leagues near their hometowns and are sharpening their skills in order to help UT Tyler defend its American Southwest Conference East Division title during the upcoming 2009 season.
