Texas-Tyler Bounces Back With DH Sweep of Texas-Dallas
Mar 29, 2008
Press Release posted by Texas-Tyler Permalink
The University of Texas at Tyler baseball team ended its two-game skid by sweeping an American Southwest Conference East doubleheader with UT Dallas on Saturday afternoon at Irwin Field. The Patriots took the first game, 5-3, and shutout the Comets in the second game, 7-0.

In game one, UT Dallas second baseman Chris Bigunet did the same thing in his first at bat today that he did yesterday, hit a 2 RBI homerun. However, Bigunet would not be the only one going yard on Saturday afternoon as junior Joe Towns (Carrollton, Texas) hit a two-run homer in the first and solo shot in the third. The homeruns were UT Tyler’s 30th and 31st of the season.

Junior Brett Holland (Lindale, Texas) allowed three runs off of eight hits, while striking out nine batters to pick up his seventh win of the season. With his nine strikeouts today, Holland becomes UT Tyler’s single season strikeout king, having struck out 73 batters so far this season. Holland has eclipsed Tim Matthew’s 2005 record of 72 with a little over three weeks left in the regular season.

In game two, UT Tyler put on the kind of offensive display that they have become known for. The Patriots picked up seven runs off of 11 hits in the game. The 11 hits were spread out among seven different UT Tyler players. Senior Clay Baker (Henderson, Texas) knocked in the Patriots’ 32nd homerun of the season, when he hit a 3 RBI homer in the sixth inning.

Junior Blake Booher (Hurst, Texas) went the distance throwing a two-hit, complete game shutout. Booher fanned 10 batters on the day and improved his record to 7-0 on the season

With the wins, the Patriots improve to 23-6 overall and 7-2 in the ASC, while UT Dallas falls to 15-13 on the season and 2-10 in conference action.

The Patriots will return to Irwin Field on Monday evening, when they host Hardin-Simmons at 5 p.m. The Cowboys took the first meeting between the two teams earlier this season by a score of 9-8 in Abilene.
