Unbeaten UT Tyler Honors Seniors, Shreds SWAG 18-0
Apr 18, 2007
Press Release posted by Texas-Tyler Permalink
The University of Texas at Tyler wrapped up the home season with an 18-0 win over NAIA Southwest Assemblies of God on Tuesday night.

UT Tyler (35-0) scored twelve runs in the first inning, with the entire lineup batting twice. UT Tyler had eight hits in the inning. Brett Amyx (SR/Coppell, TX) started the scoring (audio) with a two RBI stand-up double to left. Senior Geoff Sherman (SR/Tyler, TX), starting in the designated hitter spot, also drove in a run (audio) in the inning with a double.

The Patriots would score again in the second and third, and carry an 18-0 lead for most of the game, which was called in the middle of the eighth due to bad weather and lightning. Before the game closed, Patriots coach James Vilade was able to take out most of his seniors, allowing them one last ovation from the crowd and their teammates.

“That’s one of those things that I felt was important for our seniors,” Vilade said, “to get them that recognition and show how much we appreciate their hard work and give the fans a chance to cheer them off the field. It was a great night because we got a lot of younger guys in and they got a chance to play, but it was good to send our seniors out on a winning note.”

“There were a lot of positives tonight that will show what kind of guys we’ve got, and the way they were received by the rest of their teams shows a lot about the togetherness this team has.”

“Clay Copeland and Geoff Sherman are guys who come to mind, the seniors who have been here since the beginning, they both had great nights.”

Copeland (SR/White Oak, TX) had four runs scored on the evening, while Sherman went two-for-four with a run scored and an RBI. Kendall Fox (SO/Carrollton, TX) went three-for-four with four runs scored and an RBI.

Seniors Michael Stutts (SR/Rockwall, TX), Nate Jennings (SR/Granbury, TX), Patrick McClure (SR/Hillsboro, TX), and Blake Burnett (SR/Bremond, TX) combined for the two-hit shutout.

The Patriots are now 35-0, and are the last remaining unbeaten team in the country. UT Tyler will close out the 2007 season with road games beginning Friday at Louisiana College.
