Cornell College Takes Final Game Of IIAC Baseball Series Against Simpson

Cornell College (12-13, 4-9 IIAC) took the final game of its Iowa Conference baseball series against Simpson (12-14, 6-6 IIAC) by taking 5-3 decision over the Storm Apr. 15 in Indianola. The teams exchanged a runs in the first with Cornell scoring what proved to be the gamewinning run in the top of the fourth when Tad Barry singled home Tyler Downing. The Rams took advantage of three Simpson errors in the top of the fifth to score three runs.
Cornell starter Jim Bose allowed four hits over the first seven innings, retiring 10 in a row at one point, but Ricardo Flores (Fr., West Des Moines, Valley H.S.) opened the bottom of the eighth with an infield single. With one out, Corey Rasmussen (So., West Des Moines, Iowa, Valley H.S.) singled to move Flores to second. Kyle Meyer (Sr., Hortonville, Wis., Madison Area T.C., Appleton North H.S.) singled to load the bases. Curt Bjork (So., Mt. Vernon, Iowa, Mt. Vernon H.S.) walked to score Flores. Jeff Greenwald relieved Bose, but a passed ball to his first batter, Cory Dawson (So., Altoona, Iowa, Altoona H.S.), allowed Rasmussen to score. Greenwald struck out Dawson and Chris Jones (So., Germantown, Wis., Germantown H.S.) to end the inning.
Simpson brought the go ahead run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, Greenwald walked Flores and Jason McClaflin (Jr., Altoona, Iowa, Southeast Polk H.S.), but Greenwald retired Rasmussen with a fly out to left to end the game. Tyler Downing was 2-for-4 with two RBI’s to pace the Rams. Barry and Ben Rudman also posted 2-for-4 performances. Jason Hemann went 2-for-5. Rasmussen led the Storm as he went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Meyer went 2-for-4.
Simpson resumes action Wednesday when the Storm travel to Pella for a nine-inning game against Central. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
