Simpson Sweeps Cornell College

Simpson (12-13, 6-5 IIAC) swept Cornell College (11-13, 3-9 IIAC) in an Iowa Conference baseball doubleheader Apr. 14 in Indianola. The Storm took game one 11-3. Simpson scored two runs in the first, three in the second, and five in the third. The Storm added one more in the sixth. Storm leadoff hitter Corey Rassmussen (So., West Des Moines, Iowa, Valley H.S.) was 3-for-3 with three RBI’s, and three runs scored to pace the Storm. Jason McClaflin (Jr., Altoona, Iowa, Southeast Polk H.S.) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Curt Bjork (So., Mt Vernon, Iowa, Mt. Vernon H.S.) went 2-for-3 with three RBI’s. Casey Korn led the Rams as drove in two of the three Cornell runs. He also posted two hits.

The Storm won game two 2-1. With no score and one out in the top of the sixth, Tyler Downing doubled down the left field line for the Rams. Jason Hemann drove in Downing with a single to center for a 1-0 lead. Simpson tied the score in the bottom of the inning when Cory Dawson (So., Altoona, Iowa, Altoona H.S.) doubled to right center to plate Bjork. Cornell began the seventh with a Jim Bose single, but Storm starter Chad Scieszinski got the next three outs to send it to the bottom of the frame with the score still tied at one. Joe Pogge (Fr., Carter Lake, Iowa, Council Bluffs Jefferson H.S.) opened the inning with a single up the middle. He moved to second on a Beau Kaplan (Fr., Ankeny, Iowa, North Polk H.S.) sacrifice bunt. Korn, the Rams’ pitcher, got Jesse Reis (So., Coon Rapids, Iowa, Coon Rapids-Bayard H.S.) to strike out for out No. 2. McClaflin won the game for Simpson with a single up the middle to score Pogge. Scieszinski struck out eight and allowed four hits in the complete game effort. Dawson and McClaflin each charted two hits for the Storm. Korn was credited with the complete game as he scattered eight hits along the way.

The Simpson-Cornell series concludes Sunday in Indianola with one 9-inning game beginning at 1 p.m.
