Rhodes beats cross town rival Division II CBU 16-6

The Rhodes College baseball team pounded out 12 hits, 6 for extra bases, and drew 15 walks en route to a 16-6 victory over visiting DII Christian Brothers University this afternoon at Stauffer Field. The Lynx 2-6 hitters were a combined 9-16, with 11 runs scored, 11 RBIs, and walked 9 times. Junior Charles Simmons picked up the victory working 3 innings out of the pen. Simmons struck out 3, allowed 4 hits, and 1 run. Simmons is now 2-0 on the year with a 2.03 ERA.
The Lynx used 5 different pitchers in the designed pitcher by committee outing. Senior Chris Catalanotto started the game going two innings before Simmons came entered the game in the top of the 3rd with the Lynx leading 6-4. Freshman Matt Ungashick took care of 6th for the Lynx getting a double play with runners on first and second to get out of the jam. Sophomore Max Gertz went the next 1.1 innings before Senior Jeff Mueller came in to get the final two outs of 8th before the mercy rule was enacted in the bottom of the 8th.
The Lynx offense set the tone for the game with a six run second to take the lead and never looked back. Senior LF Richard Hurd was 2-4 with a double, 2 runs scored, 2 RBIs, and walked twice. Senior 1B Daniel Vanaman was 2-4 with 2 doubles, scored 3 runs, had 1 RBI, walked once, and stole a base. Freshman 3B Brent Lindsey was 2-3 with a triple, 3 runs scored, 3 RBIs, walked twice, and stole a base. Junior RF Mason Mosby was 2-3 with a double, 2 runs scored, 2 RBIs, walked twice, and stole a base. Senior C Matt Beesley was 1-2 with a double, run scored, drove in 3, walked twice, and had a sacrifice fly.
The Lynx are now 17-7 (3-1) are currently ranked 23rd in the country and 4th in South Region in the most recent ABCA poll.
Rhodes will return to action on Friday afternoon at 2:30 against Sewanee to open a four game conference series. Rhodes will play a double header on Saturday starting at 12:00 and a single game on Sunday with the first pitch at 12:00. The next home game will be next Friday (4/4/08) against Birmingham Southern at 3:00.
