NJCU’S JOSE FULGENCIO FEATURED IN JUNE-JULY ISSUE OF SPORTS ILLUSTRATED LATINO

JERSEY CITY, NJ…New Jersey City University shortstop JOSE FULGENCIO (Bronx, NY/San Rafael (Dominican Republic), who earlier this season had a 40-game hitting streak and 50-game on-base streak, is featured in the June-July 2008 issue of Sports Illustrated LATINO. He is the first athlete at NJCU to ever appear in the Spanish-language version of the international magazine.

Fulgencio, who on April 14 became the first NJCU baseball player to ever appear in the “Faces in the Crowd” section of Sports Illustrated, the second Gothic Knight athlete of the academic year and the eighth NJCU student-athlete on record to be featured—all since December 2000—completed his athletic eligibility this season.

During the 2008 campaign, Fulgencio extended the longest known active hitting streak in NCAA Division I, II, III or NAIA baseball to 40 games and reached base in 50 consecutive games to open his NJCU career. Both streaks finally came to an end on March 16, 2008 in game two of a doubleheader at Farmingdale State College. The hitting streak began on March 25, 2007 at the College of Staten Island, while the on-base string commenced in his very first game as a Gothic Knight on March 10, 2007 versus Muskingum College (OH). He also had a hit in 49 of 50 games to open his career.

While Fulgencio’s hitting streaks are both NJCU and New Jersey Athletic Conference records, his final streak is the fifth longest recorded in Division III history. His 50-game on-base streak is the second longest known in Division III history.

On April 12 against Rowan University, he became the fastest player in school history to record 100 career hits and the 28th overall, when he reached the plateau in only the 65th game of his career. He finished the 2008 season batting .377 (52-138) in 35 games (all starts). He tallied 35 RBIs, 33 runs, nine doubles, three triples, four homeruns and 79 total bases, while stealing 13-of-14 bases. He had a .400 on-base and .572 slugging percentage.
