Pirates Take 2-1 Series Lead in Saturday Twinbill Split
Mar 29, 2008
Press Release posted by Millsaps Permalink
JACKSON – Freshman Aaron Williams tossed a complete-game, 4-hitter in Game 1 to improve to 3-0 on the year on the hill for Millsaps in a 7-1 win before Southwestern opened up an early lead in Game 2 with nine runs in the first six innings to earn a twinbill split with a 9-6 victory in the nightcap.

Millsaps (17-10, 3-4 SCAC) jumped on the Pirates early in the opening game of the afternoon, scoring three runs in the first inning with two outs on a base-clearing 3-RBI double from freshman Tony Malaschak down the leftfield line.

The early runs allowed the Majors’ Williams to stay relaxed on the mound and do his job, scattering four hits in a scheduled 7-inning contest along with just one run off a solo home run from Kyle Belski to lead off the fifth for SU.

Millsaps added insurance runs in the sixth inning to pull away from a 3-1 lead, plating four runs in the frame off RBI-singles from Quinn Salmon and Russ Boyd (two RBIs) in addition to an RBI-walk issued to Hunter Owen.

Southwestern (13-16, 3-4) was set down in order in its half of the seventh to end the game as Millsaps drew even in the series at one game apiece.

After managing just four hits in the opening game of the afternoon and one run, the SU bats awoke in Game 2 early and the Pirates got on the scoreboard quickly, plating three runs in the first for an early 3-0 lead off two wild pitches from Millsaps starter John David Childs and an RBI-single from Eric Gonzales.

Millsaps closed the gap to 3-2 in its half of the third, using a leadoff double from Billy Murphy and a hit-by-pitch to Josh Ordeneaux to put runners in scoring position with no outs. Murphy scored two batters later off an infield error, while Ordeneaux scored off a wild pitch from SU starter Belski. The Majors couldn’t manage any more runs in the inning, loading the bases with one out, before a strikeout and a flyout ended the threat.

A pair of runs from the Pirates in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings stretched the lead out to 9-3, benefiting from a 2-RBI double from Richard Falcone and a 2-run homer to left from Michael Murphy.

Millsaps rallied for a run in the eighth and two in the ninth off Owen’s SCAC-leading ninth home run of the year to left before Brantley Freeman closed out the inning with a pair of strikeouts to give SU the 2-1 series lead.

The teams will close out a 4-game series today at Twenty Field with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. Listen live on Jackson’s ESPN Radio 1240 AM with Derrel Palmer and online at www.espnradio1240.com.

Game Notes:
Ordeneaux’s single in the sixth inning in Game 2 stretched his hitting streak out to 17 games, giving him a hit in every game played during his freshman campaign thus far.
