#23 Majors Suffer Worst Home Loss Since Feb. 27, 2000
Mar 28, 2008
JACKSON, Miss. – Junior Hunter Owen went 3-for-3 from the plate and launched his conference-leading eighth home run of the year and freshman Josh Ordeneaux extended his hitting streak to 15 games but it was the visitors from Southwestern University who scored 11 runs over the first four innings to win easily at Twenty Field Friday afternoon, 14-2 (7).
Millsaps' worst home loss came back on Feb. 27, 2000, to the same Southwestern squad, falling 15-3 and 16-3 in back-to-back days as they finished the 2000 slate with a 19-20-1 overall record – the last time a Jim Page squad has finished below .500.
Southwestern (12-15, 2-3 SCAC) drew even with Millsaps in SCAC play with its second win in league play, using three hits apiece from Todd Boone and Jamie Herrmann en route to a total of 12 on the afternoon and a game-high four RBIs from Michael Murphy.
The Pirates jumped on Millsaps' senior southpaw Travis Bogue (5-3) early with four runs in their opening at-bat, putting the first five runners on base thanks in part to three hits and an error and using RBIs from both Murphy and Herrmann.
Millsaps (16-9, 2-3) threatened to respond in the bottom half of the inning off SU starter Wes Willis (6-1), loading the bases with only one out before Willis got out of the jam with a strikeout and a force out to second to keep the Majors off the scoreboard.
Southwestern controlled the rest of the game from there, limiting Millsaps to just four hits over the final six innings and lighting up the scoreboard for 10 runs of its own in the fourth and fifth innings combined off seven hits.
The Majors' lone runs came in the fourth inning off a Joe Blades RBI-single and the sixth inning off Owen's solo-shot over the leftfield fence.
Millsaps and Southwestern will continue a four-game series on Saturday, with first pitch of a scheduled doubleheader set for 1 p.m. Game 2 can be heard live on Jackson's ESPN Radio 1240 AM and online at www.espnradio1240.com.
