Jason Monforte (White Plains, N.Y.) had three hits in game two – including a game-tying home run in the fourth inning – as the Valiants came back from a 21-7 game one loss to beat DeSales 7-4 in the nightcap and earn a split in a key Freedom Conference doubleheader.
One weekend after taking two of three games from 2007 Freedom Conference Tournament Champion Wilkes, the Valiants will host DeSales – the 2007 Freedom Conference co-Regular Season Champions – Sunday at 1:00 p.m. with a chance to take the season series from the Bulldogs. That looked unlikely for a while Saturday, as the DeSales bats unloaded against Manhattanville in game one for 21 runs on 18 hits.
Game two started much the same way for the Bulldogs, as the hosts scored four times in the first two innings. Manhattanville’s offense, however, kept pace with a run in the first on a run-scoring A.J. Triano (Rye, N.Y.) single and a pair of unearned second inning runs.
With DeSales still up 4-3 in the fourth inning of a seven-inning contest, Monforte took Danny Schiemann deep to leadoff the fourth inning and tie the score up. Two batters later Damon Obijiski (Sedona, Ariz.) doubled to the gap in left-center and with two outs Thomas Verrengia (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled in Obijiski to give the Valiants the lead. Manhattanville added one more run when Stephen Pinto (Yonkers, N.Y.) doubled in Verrengia and the Valiant pitching staff did the rest from there.
After giving up four runs in the first two frames, senior right-hander Danny Alvarez (Port Chester, N.Y.) settled down to allow only one more hit and pitch into the sixth. Steven Arroyo-Falcón (Bronx, N.Y.) nailed it down, allowing one hit over the last 1.2 innings for his first save of the season. Alvarez earned the win – the 10th of his career – and improved to 3-3 on the season.
Verrengia went 4-for-4 from the leadoff spot in the second game, scoring three times and driving in two more runs. The senior second baseman combined with Monforte (3-for-4, two runs scored) to score five of Manhattanville’s seven runs and notch seven of the Valiants’ 11 hits.
In the opener, the Valiants had another efficient offensive effort with seven run on eight hits, but DeSales pounded Manhattanville’s hurlers for 21 runs and took advantage of four Valiant errors. The Bulldogs scored in every inning and built their lead to 16-3 after an eight-run fourth.
Scott Matejicka was one of six Bulldogs with a multi-hit game, going 4-for-4 with five RBI and three runs scored. Matejicka – who finished a home run shy of the cycle – was the only DeSales player to record an extra-base hit as the Bulldogs used a carousel of 16 singles. Chris Brian went 4.2 innings and had plenty of run support to earn the win and improve to 3-0.
Triano had four two hits and two stolen bases to lead the way offensively, but the sophomore was the only Valiant with more than one hit. John Kain (Harrison, N.Y.) allowed 12 runs over three innings to suffer his first loss of the season.
Manhattanville (11-6, 3-2 Freedom) and DeSales (10-9, 3-2 Freedom) will do battle Sunday at 1:00 p.m. on Manhattanville Field for the final time in the regular season. Live Gametracker coverage will be available at www.GoValiants.com.
