St. Paul, Minn. -- Four former Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) players and one current MIAC head coach were important pieces on the 2007 St. Paul Saints professional baseball team. Pictured left to right are: pitcher Brian Whinnery, pitcher Kyle Foster, pitching coach Jason Verdugo, pitcher Charlie Ruud, and shortstop Brian Sprout. The Saints finished their season last week falling in Game 5 of the American Association Championship Series to the Forth Worth Cats.

University of St. Thomas graduate Brian Whinnery was 6-5 on the season with a 3.19 ERA. He struck out 70 batters while only walking 35. A 2007 American Association All-Star Game participant, Whinnery's 3.19 ERA was good for sixth best in the league this year. Whinnery pitched the deciding game when St. Thomas won the 2001 NCAA Division III championship.

Hamline University graduate Kyle Foster made 21 appearances in 2007 for the Saints in his first professional season. Foster pitched 43 1/3 innings and struck out 39. An All-MIAC pitcher for the Pipers, Foster struck out 65 and recorded an ERA of 3.25 in 2007 at Hamline.

Hamline University head coach Jason Verdugo finished his third season as the Saint’s pitching coach. In 2004, he came out of a four-year retirement as a pro pitcher to post a 5-5 regular season mark, tying a Saints record with four complete games. Verdugo has been head coach at Hamline for the past six seasons, leading the Pipers to the MIAC Tournament Championship game in 2006.

St. Olaf College graduate Charlie Ruud finished 2007 with a 11-3 record and a 3.63 ERA. Working 138 2/3 innings, Ruud struck out a Saints-leading 110 batters while walking only 23. He was a four-time All-MIAC selection and was named MIAC Pitcher of The Year in 2001. Ruud is an assistant coach with the Oles and attends Luther Seminary in St. Paul.

St. Olaf College graduate Brian Sprout batted .304 in 2007 playing in 96 games for the Saints. Sprout collected 11 hits, 52 RBI, and 64 runs on the season to go with a .427 slugging percentage and a .384 on-base percentage. He was named to the American Association All-Star Game North Division roster this season. Sprout is a former three-time MIAC MVP (1999-2001).
