Lynchburg Baseball Sweeps Eastern Mennonite Saturday

HARRISONBURG, VA - The Lynchburg College baseball team eclipsed the 20-win plateau for the eighth-straight season after sweeping an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader from Eastern Mennonite University Saturday afternoon. Lynchburg took the first game 3-1, before turning around to snatch the second game 6-4. The Hornets (20-7/9-1 ODAC) won their sixth straight with the afternoon sweep, also marking their 16th win in 18 outings.

In the opener, Ronnie LaBrie (Vinton, VA/Staunton River) hit a game-winning two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning, breaking open a 1-1 ballgame. Joe Devlin (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) went all seven innings, getting his fifth win of the season. Devlin allowed only one run while scattering six hits, fanning seven Royal hitters.

In the nightcap, the Hornets rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to get their third conference sweep of the season. After giving up three runs in the bottom of the third, the LC pitching staff stiffened, allowing the Hornet bats to come back with six runs over the next five innings to secure the win. LaBrie finished 3-5 with two runs scored, while sophomore Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was also 3-5 with a run scored. Jon Crews (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was 2-4 with a double and a RBI.

Junior D.W. Moore (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) got the win in game two, striking out six hitters in five and a third innings. Jon Nichols (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) was effective in relief as he gave up only two hits in the two and two-thirds innings he worked.

Jameson Jarvis had two hits in the second game for EMU (7-21/3-7 ODAC), with teammate Chris Baker collecting a pair of base knocks in the first game.

LC will now end its six-game road trip Tuesday evening when it travels to Ferrum College for a single game at 7 p.m.
