Hornet Happenins: LC comes into this week getting national ranking votes for the first time this season after the release of the pre-season poll. LC has been on fire over the last month or so, winning 13 of their last 15 games. This week LC turns their attention to the other Hornets in the region, Shenandoah University, on Friday before turning around the next day for a conference twinbill with Royals of Eastern Mennonite University at 1 p.m. in Harrisonburg, VA.
LC won all three of their games last week, taking the their last home game against Ferrum at City Stadium. LC trailed 3-1 going into the eighth inning, but seven runs in the bottom half gave the Hornets a five run lead, and Joe Devlin (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) got the win in relief. This past Saturday, the Hornets rallied to take game two of an ODAC doubleheader, completing a sweep of Randolph-Macon College down in Ashland, VA. In game one, LC jumped all over R-MC starter Charlie Hartt, scoring 10 runs in the first inning. Lynchburg won the first game 17-1, but needed four runs in the 9th inning to take the second game 6-4. Jared Millner (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) finished the game for the win, throwing three innings of scoreless ball.
At the plate, LC looks to their 3-4-5 hitters for a lot of the production. 5-hitter Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) is hitting .460 on the season, going 40-87 with five doubles, a triple and a homer. He also has 30 RBI and 15 stolen bases, both second on the team. Jon Crews (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) is second on the squad with a .426 batting average, besting the team with 15 doubles and 35 runs batted in. 3-hitter Ronnie LaBrie (Vinton, VA/Staunton River) has been stroking the ball as of late, evidenced by his back-to-back conference player of the week awards a couple weeks ago. LaBrie is posting a .404 batting average, complete with team-highs of five bombs and 17 stolen bases. Every starter is hitting at least .250 for LC, who posts an ODAC-best .354 batting average.
The pitchers for Lynchburg continue to be pretty consistent, as they are allowing just over four runs per nine innings. Joe Devlin (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) has been as solid as it gets this season, going 4-0 this season with a 0.89 ERA. Connor Thompson (Solomons, MD/Reservoirs) is 3-1 on the year, accented by a 4.50 ERA while getting a team-best seven starts. Jared Millner (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) continues to impress out of the bullpen, flaunting a 1.89 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 11 appearances. Rich Glover (Bedford, VA/Liberty) and DW Moore (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) each have two wins this season.
Last Meetings: LC and Shenandoah battled in a dual of Hornets last back on March 8, 2006, with the home Hornets taking a 10-8 victory at Fox Field. Lucas Jones, Josh Walker and Steven Scott all had two hits in that contest. EMU and LC split last year’s series on Fox Field, with LC taking game one 9-4 before turning around to drop the second 7-6 in 10 innings.
The SU Hornets: Shenandoah comes into today’s game with a 14-10 overall mark, but did take on Randolph-Macon Thursday. Greg Van Sickler is leading Shenandoah with a .443 batting average, connecting on a team-best 10 doubles. He also leads the Hornets with a .738 slugging percentage, also getting on base at a .507 clip. Scott Lambert is hitting .388 and is the only person to start all 23 games for the Hornets, while posting a team-high of 33 hits. Christian Frey leads SU with three homers, with Scott Van Dusselorp driving in 16 RBI, tops among Hornet batters. Matthew Davis paces the pitching staff with a 2.36 ERA, while posting a 4-2 record. Taylor DuFrene leads the Hornets with a 35 strikeouts.
The Royals: The Royals of Eastern Mennonite come into Saturday’s doubleheader off of a 14-4 loss to Randolph-Macon Tuesday, having also been swept by CNU Wednesday. The Royals are led by Jeff Walker, who is hitting .371 on the year with two homers and 10 RBI. Chris Harpine has started every game, going 31-94 for a .330 batting average, while Cody Davis is the only other Royal above .300 mark, hitting .329 with four doubles and 11 knocked in. On the bump for EMU, Michael Moles has thrown a team-high 44 innings, posting a 1-3 record, with Jesse Baker right being him with 43.2 innings tossed, chalking up a 4.53 earned run average.
