LEHMAN BASEBALL DEFEATS MITCHELL, FALLS TO CSI AS SEASON COMES TO AN END
May 11, 2008
Press Release posted by Lehman Permalink
The Lehman College baseball team (19-16 Overall, 9-6 CUNYAC) saw their bid for their first CUNYAC title since 1995 come to an end Saturday evening as the team fell to the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island by a score of 13-8 in the day’s final contest. Earlier, in the 1:00pm loser’s bracket game, the Lightning defeated the Mitchell College Pequots by a score of 7-2 to stay alive in the tournament.

In Lehman’s victory over Mitchell College, junior Adam Kolinoski was the story, as he pitched arguably the best game of his collegiate career, hurling a complete game and allowing just two runs (one earned) on seven hits while walking one batter and striking out two. He didn’t allow a run after the sixth inning, as he frustrated the Mitchell College lineup.

The Lightning never trailed in the contest, as Lehman plated two runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back, maintaining and building the advantage throughout the course of the game. Offensively for the Lehman, senior Jhonny Reyes paced his club by finishing 2-for-4 with a triple, double, two runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base. Third baseman Leonardo Hernandez also contributed by finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI’s.

For Mitchell College, no player had more than one hit, and the RBI’s were recorded by shortstop Seth Nowakowski who finished 1-for-4 on the day and Andy Langlais who was 0-for-4 but brought home a run via a groundout in the sixth inning.

After Lehman’s victory over Mitchell College, No. 1 Staten Island and No. 3 John Jay played a wild winners bracket contest. The Dolphins held a 12-3 lead after six innings of play, but the Bloodhounds chipped away over the remaining four innings, plating four in the seventh, one in the eighth, and four more in the ninth to tie the game at 12 apiece before tracking on two go-ahead runs in the top of the 10th to account for the two-run come-from-behind victory. The loss for Staten Island meant a meeting with Lehman in the day’s final game.

In a game that ended a half hour before midnight, the Dolphins prevailed over the Lightning to advance to the CUNYAC championship. Lehman started Steve Rodriguez made the final start of his collegiate career, and he faced off against Dolphins starter James Mardikos.

The Dolphins struck first in the contest, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning via an error by Reyes and a sacrifice fly by Pat Gale. After one inning of play, CSI led 2-0. The Dolphins tacked on three more runs in the second inning to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Lehman, just as it has done all year, made the game interesting, plating two runs in the third and two more in the fourth to cut CSI’s lead to one, 5-4.

The Dolphins would give themselves a cushion once again in the bottom of the fourth inning, pushing across three runs thanks to a two-RBI single by Andrew Baio and an RBI single by Ray Valerio. After four innings of play, CSI held an 8-4 lead. The Lightning got two runs back in the top of the sixth inning thanks to an RBI double by Amadoernesto Guzman and an RBI groundout by Matthew Arvelo.

8-6 would be as close as the Lightning would get, however, as the Dolphins put the game away in the bottom of the seventh inning, plating five runs to take a seven run lead. Lehman would dent home plate twice in the ninth inning, but the Lightning were unable to complete a comeback, giving the Dolphins the victory.

“I’m very proud of this group of guys,” Head Coach John Quirk said. “This team never gave up. They left it all out on the field and I’m very proud to have led the Lehman College Lightning back to the playoffs. We won a playoff game this year and hopefully we’ll win more than one a year from now. Losing hurts, but I like the direction our program is moving in.”

Offensively for Lehman in the loss to the Dolphins, senior Luis Alicea finished the contest 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI. Emmanuel Vera, who played shortstop in the contest, went 1-for-3 at the dish with two runs scored and a walk, and Gilbert Garcia finished 1-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI.

In his final game started for Lehman, Rodriguez allowed 10 runs (only three earned) in six and a third on nine hits while walking seven and striking out two.

For the Dolphins offensively, Anthony Piccirillo went 3-for-6 at the dish with two runs scored, and second baseman Mohamed Hamad picked up three hits, scored two runs and recorded two RBI’s.

Eric Waldhelm got the victory for CSI, tossing three and one-third innings and allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits while walking one batter.

The Dolphins and the Bloodhounds will now play for the 2008 CUNYAC Championship. For more information on when the championship will take place, please consult the CUNY website at www.cunyathletics.com.
