LEHMAN BASEBALL STEAMROLLS MACCABEES, HEADS INTO CUNY'S WITH MOMENTUM
May 05, 2008
The Lehman College baseball team (18-14 Overall, 9-6 CUNYAC) finished up its regular season with a pair of non-conference victories, defeating the Yeshiva University Maccabees (0-27 Overall, 0-16 Skyline) by scores of 10-5 and 14-5 Sunday afternoon at the South Field in the Bronx.
In the first contest of the day, sophomore Gilbert Garcia got the start for the Lightning and pitching brilliantly as he hurled a complete game, allowing five runs (two earned) on five hits while walking one and striking out a season-high 13 batters. With the victory, Garcia’s record on the season improved to 3-1. On the flip side, Maccabee starter Michael Rand lasted four innings and took the loss, as he allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits while striking out two.
The Lightning recorded a run in the first inning, three more in the second, and another run in the third to take a 5-0 lead after three innings of play. After Yeshiva University dented home plate in the fourth inning to make it 5-1, Lehman put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four times to take a commanding 9-1 lead, an advantage Lehman would not relinquish.
Offensively for the Lightning in the first game it was senior Jhonny Reyes finishing 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored, two stolen bases, and an RBI. Garcia and Amadoernesto Guzman each recorded a pair of hits, and senior Jose Garrido finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI’s.
In the second game, sophomore Jason Caraballo got the start and picked up the victory for the Lightning, and he was able to give his team distance as well as he recorded a complete game, allowing five runs (none earned) on five hits while walking one and striking out three. With the win, his record improved to 2-0. Yeshiva University starter Austin Feld lasted just three innings as he took the loss. He allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 12 hits while walking one and striking out one.
The Lightning plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning and five more in the third to take a seemingly comfortable 8-0 lead after the first three innings of play. Shaky defense by the Lightning kept the Maccabees in the game, however, as Yeshiva University was able to push across five runs in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a pair of Lehman errors. All runs Yeshiva scored in the frame were unearned. After three and a half innings of play, Lehman led 8-5.
The 8-5 score would remain the same until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Lightning would put the game out of reach by tacking on six insurance runs. After six innings, Lehman led 14-5 and held on for a victory by that same score.
Offensively for Lehman, Reyes was at it again, finishing 3-for-5 with two doubles, three runs scored, three stolen bases, and two RBI’s. By stealing three more bags in the nightcap, the speedster now has 40 thefts on the season. Senior Andrew Rosario finished 2-for-3 with three RBI’s, and Guzman and sophomore Matthew Arvelo recorded three hits apiece.
The Lightning will now have three days off before heading into their CUNYAC first round game against Staten Island on Thursday afternoon. Lehman, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, battles the No. 1 seeded Dolphins at the CSI Baseball Complex, with game-time scheduled for 4pm.
