Keystone capturs NEAC baseball title; earn NCAA berth

Rome, NY (5-3-08) - The Keystone College baseball team captured the 2008 NEAC baseball title in dominating fashion, downing Penn State Berks 16-3 in the title game.

The Giants, who finished a perfect 3-0 at the conference championship, outscored their opponents by a 40-9 margin.

By winning the conference title, the Giants earn an automatic berth into the 2008 NCAA Division III Baseball Championships. The baseball team becomes the second Keystone team in eight days to earn the automatic qualifier, as the golf team earned their trip last Friday.

The NCAA Regionals will begin play on May 14, the location of which regional Keystone will participate in will be announced in the next week.

Cody Collins was named as the tournament MVP following play. Collins collected four hits, including three doubles, in the championship game, while driving in three and scoring three.

On the weekend Collins batted .667 (10-15) with nine RBI, six runs scored, four doubles, a .933 slugging percentage and a .588 on-base percentage.

Nelson Gomez and Angel Fargas each knocked out three hits each, with Lory Leicht adding two. Gomez drove in two, while Fargas and Leicht each scored twice.

Dominick Bartoli picked up the win for the Giants, as the senior worked seven innings of six hit ball, striking out four. Brett Repard worked the final two innings, recording five strikeouts.

The teams traded runs early on, with the Giants holding a 4-3 lead as play headed into the bottom of the fifth inning. That's when the Keystone offense exploded for nine runs over the next two innings to put the game away.

In Keystone's winner's bracket game that began on Friday and concluded on Saturday morning, Jayson Rohena aided the cause with triple, double, and single as the Giants downed top-seeded Cazenovia College 14-4.

Giovannie Sanchez added three hits, while Ben Fish and Kyle Conrad added two hits each. Gomez also homered as part of his three hit outing. Gomez and Fish each drove in three runs in the game. Yadiel Lanzo fanned eight in eight innings of work to pick up the win,

In the team's first game of the tournament on Friday, Collins knocked four hits and drove in five in the 10-2 win over Penn State Berks.
