Press Release posted by Johns Hopkins Permalink
BALTIMORE, MD – The #10 Johns Hopkins baseball team jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and held off a late Mary Washington rally to secure a 17-10 win in the regular season finale for both teams. The Blue Jays (34-5) won their fifth straight as senior Todd Emr (Westwood, NJ/Saddle River Day), junior Dave Garber (Mount Joy, PA/Donegal) and sophomore Chris Huisman (Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) combined for 11 RBIs in the game.

After getting a single run in the bottom of the first, the Blue Jays got things going in the bottom of the second. Hopkins loaded the bases for sophomore Joe Borrelli (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo), who slashed a single through the right side to plate the first run of the frame. Sophomore Brian Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy) and Emr each had a single in the inning to plate two runs. Hopkins would get seven total runs in the inning and lead 8-0 after two innings of play.

The Blue Jays added another run in the third to lead 9-0 before Mary Washington got on the board with a single run in the fourth.

Mary Washington would make it a 9-6 game as they struck for five runs in the top of the fifth on five hits and two Hopkins’ errors. Eric Rehbein had an RBI double in the frame while Alex Rossi plated two with his double to left field.

The Blue Jays answered back with five runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Huisman plated two in the inning on a single down the right field line while Emr knocked in two more. The Blue Jays capped their scoring in the stanza on a double steal that saw sophomore Brendan Walsh (La Jolla, CA/The Bishop’s School) scamper home.

The Eagles would get two more runs in the sixth and seventh innings to make it a14-10 game.

The Blue Jays capped their scoring with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. The big blow of the inning came off the bat of Garber as he crushed a ball over the fence in right field for a three run home run.

Hopkins went with a pitcher by committee approach in the contest; starter Ryan Kuhlman (Hicksville, NY/Bethpage) was the only one to go more then one inning. Kuhlman picked up his sixth win of the year as he threw three innings, allowing one hit and striking out four. Seven other Blue Jays followed Kuhlman to the hill, surrendering the ten runs while striking out six.

The loss went to Zach Hendrix, who pitched 1.2 innings and gave up seven runs.

Emr extended his hit streak to 18 games after finishing 2-for-4 with three runs scored and five RBIs. Huisman was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Garber went 1-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Senior Rob Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY/Berkeley Carroll) extended his hit streak to 26 games while Youchak has now connected safely in 21 games as the pair had one hit apiece.

Hopkins is now off until the start of the NCAA Regional Tournament on May 14. The bracket and game times will be announced on Monday, May 12.
