Hendrix Baseball Team Hits Homerun With Local School
Aug 30, 2007
CONWAY, Ark.,--- The Hendrix College baseball team made a hit with school children at Ida Burns Elementary School on Thursday afternoon. The Warriors took part in the school’s KaBOOM! Project to build a play area in one day. KaBOOM! is a national organization that aims to put a safe place to play within walking distance of every child in America. KaBOOM!’s current goal is to build 1,000 play areas in 1,000 days. With the help of their founding partner, Home Depot, KaBOOM! took today to provide Conway children with a brand new play area. The Warrior Baseball team was an integral part of the project and helped with many aspects of the new play area. Building the new area was of special importance to Head Coach R. J. Thomas and Assistant Coach Jay Mattox, a Burns alumnus, as both of their mothers have worked at or still work at the school. With the help of over 200 local volunteers from several different organizations, the dream was realized. Ida Burns Elementary started the day with just a plan, but thanks to the Warrior Baseball team and other volunteers, at the end of the day they had a brand new, safe area for their students to play.
