Eagles sweep Aurora Spartans in chilly double-header
Apr 19, 2007
VERONA, Wis. (April 18, 2007) -- The Edgewood College baseball team won both games of the double-header with the Spartans of Aurora University Wednesday. The Eagles (17-8, 9-3 NAC) won the first game behind a complete game shut-out by junior Bill Dictus (Combined Locks, Wis.) and followed that up with a 10-6 win in the nightcap to complete the series sweep in a cold and drizzly day at Charles Stampfl Memorial Field.
In game one, the Eagles scored a run in each of the first three innings as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The Spartans (12-15, 5-9 NAC) attempted to get back into the game in the top of the sixth inning as they put their first scoring threat together after an Eagle error and a base-hit bunt which brought up the top of the order. But Dictus struck out the next two batters before ending the threat by inducing a ground out to end the inning. The Eagles took that momentum and put together a four run sixth inning that was highlighted by a two-run double by catcher Matt Werner (Centennial, Colo.) which extended the lead to 7-0. The Spartans were kept at bay for the next two innings before leaving the bases loaded to end the game and preserve the shutout.
Nate Meyer (Burlington, Wis.), Cory McCullick (Hudson, Ill.), and Karl Reynolds (Dodgeville, Wis.) all had two hits for the Eagles offense. Dictus improved his record to 5-2 after going all 9 innings while giving up five hits, walking two, and striking out five.
In game two, it was the Spartans who jumped out to an early lead as took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning when Berta led off the inning with a double down the right field line. Ryan Siebert (Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) then singled and Tyler Dahmen (Madison, Wis.) followed with his own single to drive in Berta. Steve Binder (Downer's Grove, Ill.) and Werner joined the hit parade for the Eagles with singles to tie the game at 4-4. Meyer broke the tie as he reached on a fielder's choice and drove in the fifth Eagle run while Reynolds drove in the sixth run with a sacrafice fly to left. Starting pitcher Rick Walsh (Green Lake, Wis.) then shut the Spartan offense down for the next two frames while the Eagles added three more runs in the sixth inning to preserve the lead. The Spartans added runs in the seventh and eighth innings but could not muster the comeback as the Eagles walked away with the sweep.
McCullick led the way for the Eagles in game two by going 3-for-4 with 2 RBI's while Werner, Reynolds, Berta, Siebert, and Dahmen all had two hits for Edgewood College. Walsh picked up his second win of the season as he went seven innings on the hill while giving up only three earned runs.
The Eagles improve their Northern Athletics Conference record to 9-3 and host Maranatha Baptist Bible College on Thursday, April 19th with the first game of the double-header slated for a 5:00 p.m. start.
