AUBURN, N.Y. – The top-seeded Cortland Red Dragons (39-3) posted a 10-1 win over the eighth-seeded Grove City Wolverines (18-17) in Wednesday’s second game of the NCAA Division III baseball regional tournament hosted by Ithaca College at Auburn’s Falcon Park. The Red Dragons advance to play fifth-seeded Montclair State at 4:30 p.m. The Wolverines will face Eastern Connecticut in an elimination game Thursday at 10 a.m.
The Red Dragons extended their winning streak to 34 in their 16th straight NCAA playoff appearance (the longest active streak in Division III); Grove City was making the program’s first trip to the NCAA tournament.
Back-to-back home runs by sophomore catcher Anthony Gardner and senior first baseman John Giametta highlighted Cortland putting up eight runs over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to break open a close game.
Gardner’s three-run home run in the seventh was his fifth of the season and his third hit of the game; Giametta followed with his fourth.
Junior Brendan Rowlands improved to 4-0, allowing three hits in six shutout innings. He walked five and allowed the lead-off hitter to reach in three of his six innings, but used seven strikeouts to work out of trouble.
Senior Mike Zaccardo – who collected four hits -- singled in a run in the fifth and came around to score on a passed ball for Cortland. An inning later, senior outfielder Anthony Coromato and senior second baseman Joey Russo hit RBI singles.
The Wolverines got on the board in the ninth; senior outfielder Brian Moran singled in sophomore first baseman Tyler Thompson.
Junior outfielder Seth Thompson collected three of Grove City’s seven hits.
