11-run inning powers Central past Simpson

PELLA(Iowa)—There’s nothing like an 11-run inning to turn a game around.
Trailing 9-1, Central College put up a record 11 runs in the fifth inning and emerged with a 15-11 Iowa Conference baseball win over Simpson College Wednesday.
The victory gives the Dutch (14-13 overall, 7-7 conference) the edge in the teams’ three-game series. They split a doubleheader at Indianola April 3.
Limited to three hits in the first four innings, Central erupted for 11 runs on eight hits, three walks and two errors. Right fielder Ben Tressel had a double and a two-run single in the inning as the Dutch sent 15 batters to the plate. Tressel was on base five times in the game with the two hits and three walks and scored four runs. Left fielder Michael Edwards also had an RBI double but Central’s other six hits in the inning were singles.
“You’ve got to give our guys so much credit,” coach Adam Stevens said.
“The thing we always preach is that in a nine-inning game, you’re never out of it—although when you’re down eight runs, you’re pretty close,” he conceded.
“But we went up with a good approach at the plate and just had a really good inning. We were due for one of these games and it couldn’t have happened at a better time.”
The win vaults the Dutch past Simpson (12-15 overall, 6-7 conference) into fourth place in the league standings.
Ben Gander, the second of five Central pitchers, got the win and improved to 3-1.
Simpson had jumped ahead 5-0 after two innings. Pitcher Cory Dawson delivered a two-run homer in the first inning and the Storm added three runs in the second, knocking out Dutch starter Mike Luce.
After Central’s big frame, the Dutch came back with single tallies in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings and carried a 15-9 lead into the ninth.
“It’s really hard not to have a letdown after a big inning like that, but we didn’t do that,” Stevens said. “On a day like this with the wind blowing out, every run is important.”
Simpson made things interesting with a two-run ninth inning before Kyle Fuerstenberg got the final three outs, allowing one hit.
Stevens also liked the effort of reliever Doug Eisenman who tossed two scoreless innings after Central took the lead.
“He did an outstanding job, coming into a spot like that as a freshman,” Stevens said.
Central racked up 15 hits, getting three from second baseman Jake Jadlowski and catcher Quinn O’Brien while first baseman Jeremy Kippley and designated hitter Tom Sheehan each had two hits as Kippley ripped his first triple of the season.
Central stays at home for another three-game series this weekend against Loras College. The teams play a nine-inning game at 3 p.m. Friday at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex Field, then have a pair of seven-inning contests Saturday starting at 1 p.m. The Duhawks are 4-6 in the league and 12-11 overall. Loras took two out of three games from the Dutch last year.
