Press Release posted by Carthage Permalink
The Carthage College baseball team (10-0, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked third in the March 18 “D3baseball.com” poll, ran its season-opening winning streak to 10 games on Saturday, March 22 with a 10-4 win over St. Norbert College (6-3) at Florida College in Temple Terrace, Fla. Carthage’s win on Thursday, March 20 over McDaniel College set a school record with eight-straight wins to start a season. The 1998 Red Men started the year 7-0, as did the 2004 squad. Carthage’s 1999 team went 11-0-1 on its spring trip. This year marks the Red Men’s first-ever undefeated and untied spring trip.

In Saturday’s contest, Carthage took a 1-0 lead in the first inning Boe Baitinger led off the game with a triple, the Red Men’s 11th three-bagger in 10 games, and he scored on a wild pitch. St. Norbert scored two runs in the bottom of the frame and one more in the second to take a 3-1 lead off starting pitcher Mario Perez. Carthage scored a run in third and one in the fifth to tie the game, 3-3. Jason Acevado hit an RBI-single in the third and Mike Hughes a run-scoring single in the fifth. The Red Men scored three times in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead, as Tony Zdok hit a two-run single and later scored on an outfield error. After the Green Knights cut the lead to 6-4 in the bottom half of the sixth, Carthage tacked on three more runs in the eighth and one in the ninth for the final 10-4 margin. Acevado drilled a three-run homer in the eighth, and Ty Heegeman hit an RBI-double in the ninth.

Mario Perez (2-0) was the winning pitcher. Perez worked the first five and one-third innings and allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks. Bryan Kieffer worked the final three and two-thirds innings to earn his first collegiate save. Kieffer blanked St. Norbert on five hits and a walk. Acevado went three-for-four with four RBI and finished the trip with a .541 batting average, seven doubles, four triples, two home runs, 19 RBI and an 1.108 slugging percentage. Tony Zdok went two-for-four with two RBI, and Boe Baitinger went three-for-six with three runs scored, a triple and two stolen bases. Carthage is scheduled to open its CCIW-schedule versus Wheaton College (Ill.) on Friday, March 28 with a 6:30 p.m. game at Alexian Field in Schaumburg, Ill. The Saturday, March 29 doubleheader versus Wheaton (Ill.), scheduled for the Carthage Baseball Field, has been moved to Legion Field in Carol Stream, Ill., with a start time of 1 p.m.
