Kingsmen Overpower La Sierra in Season Opener

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Senior Jordan Ott went 4-for-6 on the day with two home runs and seven RBI as the Cal Lutheran baseball team overwhelmed La Sierra University in a doubleheader at CLU on Sunday, winning 14-0 in the first game and 18-0 in the second. Nine Kingsmen pitchers combined to allow no runs and just seven hits over 16 innings.
In the first game senior Matt Martin continued where he left off last season with a leadoff triple in the first Kingsmen at bat of the season. Last year, Martin set the program record with 10 three-baggers. He finished the game with two hits, an RBI and scored three times.
Junior transfer Seth Dolar started behind the plate in game one and did damage at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a long home run to left field in his first at bat as a Kingsmen.
The Kingsmen led 6-0 after the first three innings and the score remained the same until CLU put up a six-run seventh inning to extend its lead to 12-0.
Freshman Trevor Koons made his collegiate debut with a 3-for-4 performance with two walks, an RBI and two runs scored.
Senior Greg Gelber started the game and tossed five innings, allowing no runs on two hits and struck out four.
CLU added a pair of runs in the eighth inning and went on to secure a 14-0 victory in the season opener.
Josh Larson, Jordan Cox, Byron Minnich and Ian Durham each pitched in an inning in relief and combined for five strikeouts while not allowing a run.
Ott tallied two hits, three RBI and two walks while fellow senior Paul Hartmann added two hits, two RBI and drew a walk.
After a scoreless first inning in the second game, CLU produced a 10-run second. Sophomore Tom Hocutt drove in four of the runs with an RBI triple early in the inning and came back to the plate to blast a three-run homer to right field. It was the second three-run shot of the inning as Ott hammered a pitch to left center field driving in three runs, four batters earlier.
Ott added a second homer when he led off the third inning, going deep to right field. He finished the second game 2-for-3 with four RBI.
CLU added three runs in both the third and fourth innings and two more in the fifth gave the Kingsmen the 18-0 lead. The second game went just seven innings.
Sophomore Brandyn Delgado and junior Travis Dadigian each had a game-high with three hits.
Senior Robbie Selden drew the start and picked up the win after going four innings in the seven inning contest. Selden allowed just two hits and did not allow a run, while striking out six.
Sophomores Ethan Aukee and Spencer Trygg and freshman John LaMoure each threw an inning in relief. LaMoure struck out the side in the seventh to end the game.
Cal Lutheran (2-0) will face its first road test when it travels to Wesmont College on Feb. 3. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
