UT Tyler's Holland Picked in MLB Draft, ASC's 13th All-Time Selection
Jun 09, 2008
Press Release posted by American Southwest Conference Permalink
RICHARDSON, Texas –– University of Texas at Tyler junior right-handed pitcher Brett Holland was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 48th round (1,435 selection overall) in Major League Baseball’s 2008 First-Year Player Draft.

The 6-1, 185-pound Holland (Lindale, TX / LHS) went 11-0 with a 2.76 ERA and 112 strikeouts in 91 1/3 innings this season to guide the Patriots to the American Southwest Conference East Division championship. Holland set single-season conference records in pitching victories, winning percentage and strikeouts in a game (15).

Holland was one of 19 players from NCAA Division III selected in the draft this season. He also became the third Texas-Tyler player drafted in the past two seasons, joining right-handed pitcher Nathan Jennings and first baseman Brett Amyx from 2007.

The ASC’s all-time draft pick total is now at 13 players, while five have signed free agent contracts – all since 1999. The conference’s first season of baseball was in 1997.
