ASC All-Conference Awards Announced

RICHARDSON, Texas –– McMurry University’s senior third baseman Derek David and junior right-handed pitcher Cody Curry (West Division), and the University of Texas at Tyler’s senior second baseman Clay Baker and senior right-handed pitcher Blake Booher (East Division) all earned to player honors to highlight the 2008 American Southwest Conference baseball awards, following a division-only vote by each division’s head coaches, the conference office announced on Monday.
David (Richmond, TX / Western Texas JC) was named West Division Player of the Year after setting an ASC single-season record with 26 home runs – shattering the previous record of 17. David, who batted .450 and also led the conference in runs batted in (74), slugging percentage (.921), hits (85), total bases (174) and runs scored (78), set an all-time NCAA Division III record by homering in seven straight games.
Curry (Waxahachie, TX / Cisco JC) was named West Division Pitcher of the Year after going 9-1 with a 3.88 ERA. He tossed six complete games – including one shutout – and struck out 82 batters in 72 innings of work.
Both David and Curry helped guide McMurry to the ASC title and were first team All-West selections.
Baker (Henderson, TX / Northwestern State) was named East Division Player of the Year. He batted .401 with 10 home runs, 47 RBIs and four triples. Baker led the conference in at-bats (197) and was atop the East leader board in hits (79), sacrifice bunts (10), and total plate appearances (226).
Booher (Hurst, TX / L.D. Bell HS) was named the East Division Pitcher of the Year after setting the ASC’s single season record with 11 victories. He, along with teammate Brett Holland, broke the record of 10 wins reached 10 different times since 1998. Booher posted an ASC East-best 2.06 ERA and surrendered just 62 hits in a league-high 91 2/3 innings of work. He also struck out a conference-high 40 batters looking.
Both Baker and Curry helped the Patriots to the East Division title and were first team All-East picks.
Other West Division award winners were Concordia University Texas junior outfielder Tom Williams (Austin, TX / AHS), who was named newcomer of the year after hitting 21 home runs. Howard Payne University outfielder Taylor Zambreski (Aledo, TX / AHS) was the top freshman after batting .411. McMurry’s Lee Driggers, CTX’s Mike Gardner and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Micah Wells all shared top coaching honors after guiding their clubs to a piece of the division crown.
Other East Division award winners were East Texas Baptist University sophomore outfielder Kyle Pope (Longview, TX / Texas-Tyler), who was dubbed newcomer of the year after hitting 15 doubles. Louisiana College catcher Anthony Benoit (Baton Rouge, LA / St. Michaels HS) was named the top freshman after throwing out a conference-high 15 runners. Mississippi College’s Brian Owens was voted top coach after guiding the Choctaws to the championship round of the ASC tournament.
