Sitting pretty

The list of 2-0 teams remaining in this year's regionals contains a fair number of teams who have made appearances in Appleton. Teams such as Marietta, Heidelberg, Chapman, UW-Whitewater and Shenandoah. The eventual winner of the Eastern Connecticut-Cortland State game will join the list when the game is resumed Friday morning.
And then there's a new name on the list. Not just new to being 2-0 in the regionals, but new to the regionals in the first place. That's Misericordia, the team with barely a home game all season, the one whose new ace pitcher is the program's all-time best -- power hitter, that is.
On Thursday, that ace, Nate Newman, threw a three-hit shutout against Catholic to lift the Cougars to 2-0.
In the Mideast, familiar foes Marietta and Heidelberg are each 2-0 and will meet again on Friday afternoon. Chapman is the only 2-0 team in the West, while UW-Whitewater is sitting pretty in the Midwest, Buena Vista in the Central and No. 8 seed Bridgewater State and second seed Western New England will meet in Harwich.
